Transport of InfiniBand over MPLS • draft-puri-pwe3-ib-encap-01.txt • Suresh Shelvapille, suri@baymicrosystems.com • Vikas Puri, vikas@baymicrosystems.com
InfiniBand Introduction • Interconnect technology connecting CPUs and I/O • Designed around a point-to-point switched IO fabric • Was not meant for WAN connectivity • Super high performance • High bandwidth - up to 120Gbps • Low latency • Low CPU Utilization • Open industry standard (infinibandta.org) and common software stack (OpenFabrics.org) • High reliability – redundancy, lossless • Centrally Managed – by Subnet Manager Transport of IB over MPLS 2
Conceptual Overview IBA System Area Network (Ref: InfiniBand Architecture Specification, Vol. 1, Figure 1, Page 87) Transport of IB over MPLS 3
Draft Objectives • Introduce the concept of an InfiniBand (IB) pseudowire that is used to carry InfiniBand frames over an MPLS network. • Allow service providers to offer ”emulated” InfiniBand services over existing MPLS networks. • Specify the encapsulation of InfiniBand PDUs within a pseudowire. • Specify how islands of IB fabrics can be connected via PWs to form a single IB subnet. Transport of IB over MPLS 4
Reference Model • The following figure shows an ”emulated point-to-point IB service.” The draft specifies a ”port-mode” service. • The IB Pseudo-port is a logical port that is configured by the IB Subnet Manager. Transport of IB over MPLS 5

Next Steps • Solicit comments on the PWE3 mailing list. • Request that the draft be adopted as a WG document. Transport of IB over MPLS 7
