2. Introduction One of the methods of using the internet to teach students is known as a virtual field trip and one specific type is a WebQuest. The Webquest was developed by and has been championed by Dr. Bernie Dodge at San Diego State University. A video of him discussing WebQuests and one of his exercises has been included in this Webquest. The goal of your instructors is for you to experience a Webquest from the point of view of the student while learning about them and how to create them as a future educator. Please make sure you have the handout that goes with this WebQuest before you begin. You can open it on Falconlink and save a copy that can be emailed to your instructor after you complete it. You will be evaluated on your completion of the handoutyour group work, and your sharing of reasoned opinions with the class. A rubric is provided in the evaluation section of this Webquest. 9. Conclusion Webquests are a way to use technology to foster inquiry based learning. They ask the student to be very active and to take responsibility for their learning. The teacher acts as a facilitator and coach—setting up the inquiry and scaffolding the student. Because students are actively involved and taking responsibility, it frees the teacher to offer individual assistance as needed. They also help the student learn problem-solving skills, think in a more in depth manner, practice using technology, and work as a team. All of these skills are needed in our current work culture. I hope you have enjoyed this Webquest and gotten a feel for what they are and how they work from “both” sides of the desk. If you have additional questions please contact your instructor.
