Why Did it Start? • The cold war started because the Soviet Union and the United States wanted to see who would dominate the world. • They thought they had better systems of government and economics, so they wanted to see which one was stronger. • It was more like a competition between the two rather than a war.

  4. When Did it Begin? • The Cold war began on February 4, 1945. • It started when the United States decided to protect Iran from the Soviet Union. • It started right after World War 2 ended.

  5. Containment • Throughout the Cold war there were many changes to the U.S. policy while Mccarthyism targeted home • To fight the Soviet threat, Americans chose the strategy of containment. • This policy shaped our way of thinking for the next four years.

  6. Timeline • 1950 June: U.S. and other U.N. members fight North Korean forces. (the Korean War ends July 27, 1953) • 1953 Aug.: U.S. sponsored coup overthrows Iranian government. • 1954 June: U.S. sponsored coup overthrows Guatemalan government. Sept.: Southeast Asia Treaty Organization (SEATO) formed. • 1955 May: Warsaw Pact formed. July: First Summit Meeting between President Dwight Eisenhower and Premier Nikita Khrushchev. • 1956 Nov.: Red Army crushes the Hungarian Revolution. • 1957 Oct.: Soviets launch first man-made satellite. • 1959 Feb.: Fidel Castro becomes premier of Cuba, installs Communist government.

  7. The Cold War The Cold War was the name given to the tense relationship between the United States and the Soviet Union right after World War 2 ended. The reason for the Cold War was because of economical and political differences between the two countries. It began in 1945 and ended in 1991.
