ASSUMPTION • We can start from this reflection: • … By observing and reflecting on the way that other cultures manage their social relationships through language, and comparing the practices of others with our own, we become intercultural language learners. (John Corbett University of Glasgow) • But simple observation is not enough: something more is needed.

  3. INTERCULTURAL OBJECTIVES • To enable students to understand and respect people from other cultures as individuals with other distinctive perspectives, values and behaviours • to help them interact with people of other cultures • To create intercultural awareness

  4. LANGUAGE OBJECTIVES • To consolidate skills in writing argumentative texts / opinion essays • To express one's own opinion and support it with factual evidence • To develop abilities in arguing on critical incidents. • To deliver oral speeches to peers

DISCIPLINARYOBJECTIVES • To go deeper into the knowledge of the main historical and social events of the USA by analysing Obama's and MLK's speeches • To understand the causes which forced signers to write the Declaration of Independence • To analyse the main features of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights

  8. THE PILOT: 1.Getting into the mood: creating the setting for intercultural work • getting in touch with partners from Slovenia and Turkey through the space • providng definitions of culture • answering questions prepared by partners

  9. THE PILOT: 2. Working on the sources • Reading and watching Obama'sVictory Speech • studying causes and effects of American Revolution and analysing the Declaration of Independence • The UDHR • I have a dream by MLK

  10. THE PILOT:3. Taking action and becoming aware of intercultural and global issues • Students prepare a speech of 5 minutes on a topic of interest to be delivered to their peers
