MEASURING POPULATIONS BY: HOCK (KEWWI), EDWB (BANANA), AND DEMN (NECTARINE)
DIRECT OBSERVATION COUNTING ALL OF THE MEMBERS IN A POPULATION. WE WENT TO AN ANT HILL AND COUNTED ALL OF THE ANTS IN THE COLONY.
INDIRECT OBSERVATION OBSERVING THE SIGNS OF ORGANISMS AND ITS HABITAT. WE WENT TO THE WOODS AND FOUND A BEEHIVE. THEN WE COUNTED ALL THE HONEYCOMBS IN THE HIVE.
SAMPLING ESTIMATING THE NUMBER OF ORGANISMS IN AN AREA BASED ON THE NUMBER IN A SMALL AREA. WE WENT TO A FIELD AND COUNTED THE NUMBER OF FLOWERS IN A SQUARE FOOT.
MARK-AND-RECAPTURE CATCHING ORGANISMS AND MARKING THEM, THEN RELEASING AND CAPTURING AGAIN. WE WENT TO A LAKE AND CAPTURED RAINBOW FISH, MARKED THEM WITH A PERMANENT MARKER, RELEASED THEM, AND THEN CAPTURED THEM AGAIN LATER.
