Reporting Category 2 Force and Motion
First we need to define the word FORCE: • The cause of motion (what causes objects to move) • Two types of forces • Pushes • Pulls (Gravity, Friction)
Forces are measured in Newtons • SI unit of force • Symbol: N • Measured by using a spring scale
How Can Forces Affect Objects? • Slow them down • Speed them up • Stop them • Start them • Change their direction • Change their shape
Explain Balanced Forces • When all the forces acting on an object balance each other • Balanced forces do not cause a change in motion (no movement)
Describe Friction • Force that resists motion between two touching surfaces (sandpaper) • Acts in the opposite direction of the object’s motion • Produces heat
Sir Isaac Newton • Born Jan. 4, 1643 in England. • As a young student, Newton didn’t do well in school. • He worked hard and continued his education. • Later in life, Newton contributed ideas that became law in the worlds of science and math.
Distinguish Between Speed and Velocity • Speed describes distance and time • Velocity describes distance, time, and direction
