  1. Reporting Category 2 Force and Motion

  2. First we need to define the word FORCE: • The cause of motion (what causes objects to move) • Two types of forces • Pushes • Pulls (Gravity, Friction)

  3. Forces are measured in Newtons • SI unit of force • Symbol: N • Measured by using a spring scale

  4. How Can Forces Affect Objects? • Slow them down • Speed them up • Stop them • Start them • Change their direction • Change their shape

  5. Explain Balanced Forces • When all the forces acting on an object balance each other • Balanced forces do not cause a change in motion (no movement)

  6. Balanced Forces

  7. Unbalanced Forces

  8. Describe Friction • Force that resists motion between two touching surfaces (sandpaper) • Acts in the opposite direction of the object’s motion • Produces heat

  9. Sir Isaac Newton • Born Jan. 4, 1643 in England. • As a young student, Newton didn’t do well in school. • He worked hard and continued his education. • Later in life, Newton contributed ideas that became law in the worlds of science and math.

  10. NEWTON’S FIRST LAW OF MOTION

  11. NEWTON’S SECOND LAW OF MOTION

  12. NEWTON’S THIRD LAW OF MOTION

  13. Distinguish Between Speed and Velocity • Speed describes distance and time • Velocity describes distance, time, and direction

  14. Velocity (speed) vs. Time

  15. Distance vs. Time

  16. Formulas:

  17. Formulas

  18. Potential and Kinetic Energy

  19. TYPES OF ENERGY Obj. 4 Physics

  20. Energy Transformation
