Endangerment of Wolves Westward expansion led to the hunting of the wolves which later led to endangerment. In the early 1900’s about 136 wolves were killed inside the park. Mid-1900’s nearly all wolves were wiped out in the United States.
Date This is an ongoing problem due to the wolves numbers still being a concern, but since the reintroduction of the species in 1994 the wolf population has significantly increased.
Wolves affecting the Environment Wolves affect the population of the moose. Whenever wolf population increases, moose population decreased and when wolf population decreases moose and buffalo population increase.
Two-Sides? The main concern with the reintroduction of the wolf species into Yellowstone was the legality of the program. Since the wolves were delisted from the endangered species list, there was a legal battle as to whether or not the program should continue and if a portion of the wolves were transferred to Yellowstone should be removed.
Two-Sides continued... The legal problems ended September 30th, 2012, when it was decided that they would not reintroduce more wolves, but not remove any as well. This decision also resulted in the appropriate State, Tribal, and Federal Agencies being placed in charge of the wolves conservation efforts.
Future Outcome The wolf population has become more stable over time. This being said, the agencies in charge of the wolves have decided to halt any efforts interfering with the wolves and allow for them to be self managed by nature, though they continue to monitor the populations to ensure their success.
