Alcohol Facts • Alcohol is a drug that has great potential for abuse • Underage drinking is ILLEGAL and has consequences • Drinking alcohol can be dangerous at ANY age • You can hurt more than just yourself
Alcohol effects • At first, a drinker may feel energetic or “buzzed” • Natural depressant, slows down the central nervous system • Intoxication…inability to walk to unconsciousness • Cannot absorb nutrients = malnutrition
Alcohol and Teens • Alcohol consumption in adults declined • 80% of teens nationwide had at least one drink • Alcohol impacts the following: • School Work • Athletic Performance • Friendships • Family • Job
Teen Facts • Half of teen deaths are alcohol/drug related (many accidents) • Alcohol is a factor in many STD and unplanned pregnancies • As well as rape, suicide and homicide
Why Teens Drink • Reasons below are similar to adults: • To escape pressure/problems • To feel better/get over being sad • To deal with stress and relax • TO FEEL MORE CONFIDENT IN SOCIAL SITUATIONS • EXCITEMENT • FRIENDS • Bored • REBELLIOUS
Factors of Alcohol Use • Friends and family have an impact • ADVERSTISEMENTS • Over $1 billion/per year on ads • Freshman have seen more than any other product • Actually AIMED AT TEEN AUDIENCES
Advertisements • Commercial Strategies • Young, attractive people • Party atmosphere w/ music • Healthy, beautiful surroundings • Problem-free drinking • A slogan • Effects of Ads • They are successful, wouldn’t spend the money • Sporting Events/Colleges/Scoreboards • Promotions (T-Shirts, hats, etc)
Examples • Bud Light • Corona • Jose Cuervo • Ciroc • Budweiser • VERY IMPORTANT • IT IS AGAINST THE LAW TO BUY, PROCESS OR DRINK ALCOHOL IN THE USA UNDER THE AGE OF 21
