Kingdoms • Deccan was divided into many kingdoms after the decline of Maurya power. • Had its own capital • Had many different temples (Hindu and Buddhist) • Different languages (Sanskrit) • The Tamil kingdoms were occupied by the southern most part of India. • Trade was important • Improved harbors to support sea trade. • Rich and diverse literature.
Golden age • Trade and farming brought riches. • Students learned many subjects. • math • Medicine • Physics • Languages • literature • Decimal System was developed.

Family And Village Life • Joint families (3 generations living in one house) • Patriarchal- oldest male is head of household • Family arranges marriages • Caste system- people were divided by occupations, ranging from priests to laborers. One was born into their caste and could not leave it. • Villages varied in size • Villages produced most of the food needed from farming
