EMPIRES IN INDIA Maurya Dynasty Location: Ganges Valley and the Deccan; Capital was Pataliputra which had libraries, schools, palaces, temples, parks surrounded by a great wall. Government: Well organized Bureaucracy. Emperors: Founded by Chandragupta Maurya; most honored emperor was Asoka who ruled by moral example and improved people’s lives. Decline: Asoka died…rival princes battled for power and the empire fell apart.
Kingdoms of the Deccan Location: The Deccan Plateau People: Dravidians that had different languages and tradition than the Aryans of the North. Tamil Kingdoms: Ruled by Queens and left a rich literary history. Religion: Hindu & Buddhist traditions blended with local cultures. Rulers were tolerant of all religions.
GUPTA DYNASTY Location: North India; Capital was Pataliputra. Government: Strong central government, some power was left to individual villages & cities. Trade & Farming: exported cotton cloth, pottery, metal ware to E. Africa, Middle East, and Southeast Asia. Harvested wheat, rice and sugar cane. Arts & Learning: painted on temple walls, collected and recorded fables & folktales in Sanskrit; religious schools taught medicine, literature, languages, physics and math.
