The Synod Mission Model Synod of Living Waters Synod of The Sun Created Living Waters for the World Established effort and curriculum Successful in 24 nations In need of solar power for water treatment plants, current focus: Haiti. • Created Solar Under the Sun • Modeled after Living Waters for the World • Inaugural class graduated in May 2010; Classes occur every 3-5 months. • 50% of graduates have already gone on missions. http://www.solarunderthesun.org/
Who comes? • A physics professor from Rice University • A gardening enthusiastic from Little Rock • A farmer from Louisiana who went to Haiti • A tornado survivor from Arkansas • A United Campus Ministries pastor • Elders, deacons, and people who sit in the back pew…. • Mission committee members • Living Waters for the World graduates interested in converting projects to solar power • A father and son team • A grants management specialist from a major university • Graduate students in emergency management from Oklahoma State • Interfaith: Baptist, Catholic, Episcopalian • Not gender specific

What is the training like? http://www.solarunderthesun.org/ • Embedded in scripture • Carefully scripted out for Solar I and II • Notebook provided • Process, Forms • Skilled instructors dedicated to solar power and community development There will be no more night. They will not need the light of a lamp or the light of the sun, for the Lord God will give them light. And they will reign for ever and ever. Revelation 22:5
We Work as a Team • Solar I • The Initiating Partner • Find potential sites with local partners • Co-define a suitable and sustainable local project • Conduct an assessment for the Solar II technical team • Negotiate a covenant agreement • Raise money!$$! • Solar II • Work with Solar I • The technical team • Build the system • Transport the system • Install the system • Training local partners on maintenance • Supporting a sustainable project
Solar One Participants Learn: To form and nurture teams To evaluate potential locations To negotiate covenant agreements To coordinate Solar 1 and 2 team members To sustain a long –term relationship with partners
What are the power needs? • Ask Operating/local partners – scale matters • Examples: • Refrigeration units in medical clinics • Lights at an orphanage so they can study • Power for cell phones • Water treatment plants Water treatment plant installed in Haiti by Living Waters for the World, powered by solar panels.
What is a SUTS Covenant? • A three year agreement • Initiating partner and Local partner sign it • It is a relationship with the Synod • Outlines the shared vision, the mission approach and the purpose as well as everyone’s responsibilities http://www.solarunderthesun.org/
Solar 2 Goals To prepare a graduate to take the technical lead on solar installations at institutional settings in places primarily outside the U.S. that need electrical power.
Why will this process work? • We are a covenant people. • Sustainable • Three Years: install, train, support • Six Years: local OP can replace and repair • Nine Years: self-sufficiency • Once sustainable, the systemcan produce income for the local community.
The Costs • $500 for the training per person • Cost is often paid by a local mission committee or fund raising event • Additional costs that may be shared (or free if borrowed): • $35 for a Kill a Watt meter (upper left) • $300 for a Solar Pathfinder (upper right)
