Hydra • The Hydra was a monster with nine heads and poisonous breathe. • It lived in the swamps . • It ate cattle and crops ruining the land. • The hydra was very hard to kill, because if any of its heads are cut off two more heads will grow back in its place.
Cerberus • Cerberus was a dog with three heads and a dragons tail. • He guarded the entrance to the underworld. • Cerberus will let anyone into the underworld but will not let anyone out.
Medusa • Medusa was a mortal woman until she was turned into a dragon like monster and snakes for hair and turned people to stone. • She was punished by Athena.
Cyclopes • The Cyclopes were unusual giants. • Each Cyclopes have one huge eye in the middle of their forehead. • The Cyclopes were sent to live in the underworld by their brother , Cronus had a son, the famous god Zeus. Zeus released the Cyclopes from the underworld and thank him by giving Zeus gifts off thunder bolts. Zeus used these gifts to ruin cronus and make himself god of the universe.
Chimera • The chimera was a monster with the head of a lion, the tail of a dragon and the body of a goat. • The chimera also breathed fire. • Bellerphon became a hero when he manage the almost impossible task of slaying the Chimera.
Sphinx • The Sphinx was a monster with the body of a lion, the wings of bird and the head of a woman. • The sphinx sat at the entrance to the city of thebes and asked a riddle to those who wanted to enter. Who ever solved it could enter the city those who could not solve it would be killed. • This is the riddle: What is it that has four feet at the morning two at noon and three at night. • The answer is a man that crawls on four feet as a baby stands upright as an adult and walks with a stick as an old man.
Harpies • Harpies were creatures that possessed the wings , body's, and claws of birds and the head of a women. • They could fly as fast as the wind and their feathers were as strong as armor. • And were known to capture mortals and take them to the underworld . • It is also said that they always leave a disgusting smell.
Scyclla • Scylla was a disgusting monster with six necks and twelve feet each head had three sets of teeth which she used to kill anyone who crossed her way. • Odysseus, the Greek hero, and his men sailed by these monsters. They lost six men from Scylla.
Minotaur • The minotaur was a monster with the body of a man and the head of a bull. • King minos hired deadalas an architect and a inventor to build a maze for the minotaur deadalas build such a complex no one could get out and king minos feed human victims. • Theseus was a Greek hero who wanted to up an end to the killings. He made himself be one of the victims to be sent to the minotaur. The king’s daughter, Arianne, fell in love with Theseus and gave him string to use in the maze to help him find his way out. Theseus killed the minotaur and used the string to lead the imprisoned men and women victims to safety.
Nemean lion • Greeks believed the god Zeus placed a gigantic lion in the sky with the stars • This lion lived in the city of Nemea • The people who lived in that region were terrorized by the lion. • Several times the they tried to destroy the beast. • Hercules was the one who killed the beast.
Echidna • Echidna was a monstrous she dragon with the head of a woman • She properly represented or presided over the corruptions of earth rot, slime fetid waters illness and disease and was called mother of the monsters.
Typhon • Typhon is the offspring of a union between Tartaros and Gaia. • He is described as a monster with a hundred dragon like heads and serpent feet • The Greek of Egypt described typhon a mortal enemy of Osiris and was killed by Zeus with mount Etna.
