  2. Overview • ENT4410: Research-Based Innovation • ENT 4210: Practical Innovation Management • Initiation of MSc-thesis • Extra curricular activities

  3. ENT 4410: Research Based Innovation • Q: What makes research based innovation work and what doesn’t? • Weekly meetings in the seminar form • Includes three components: • Legal aspects of new business creation • Practitioner focus • Research methods • Case study of research-based innovation

  4. ENT 4410: Research Based Innovation • Legal aspects of new business: • Teacher: Christian Bendiksen (laywer) • Focus on those things that may break a venture and land you in court • Practical analysis and functional overview • Four weekly meetings • Knowledge will be utilized in exam

ENT 4410: Research Based Innovation • Practitioner focus • Invited practitioner from the innovation field talk about their experiences and approaches • Utilize the literature to address the question of innovation addressed in this course: What makes research based innovation work and what doesn’t? • Readings are assigned for the whole course, but reading up in advance is adviced.

ENT 4410: Research Based Innovation • Research Methods and Thesis: • The last part of the course includes an introduction to research methods to be used for the MSc-thesis. • This will also include a period of self-study (may) during which you are expected to come up with a thesis topic • I am available for topic and design discussions throughout the semester

ENT 4410: Research Based Innovation • Exam paper: • Individually written 10 pages of text (1,5 line spacing) • Case study of a knowledge intensive innovation process focussing on a company or a person. • Q: In this case, which were the factors that made innovation easy or difficult? Not focus on the market or the technology, but on the process taking into account infrastructural, organizational and institutional conditions. • Primary or secondary data • Make short intro to the problem and case you are going to analyse (1 page) • Use the literature to provide a theoretical background and motivate a structure for the case study. (2 pages) • Metod (0,5-1 pages) • Case (4 pages) • Analyse case using the literature. (2 pages)

  8. ENT 4210: Practical Innovation Management • Practical course aimed at developing parts of a business model/plan for a Simula or Birkeland project. • Focus on market analysis • Starts in February and runs through the semester • Cooperation with Birkeland/Simula people/entrepreneurs of central importance • SFE supervisor Tronn Skjerstad will run a ’supervisory seminar series’ (four half-day meetings) which will focus on the different part of the marketing plan • Further details will follow at the start of the course

  9. Initiation of MSc-thesis • Thesis is to be written during the 2006 Fall semester. • Ca 60 pages on an innovation /e-ship topic of your choice. • The focus can be to analyse a problem in innovation or to identify a successful practice. • Can take its point of departure from issues you have dealt with during the courses. • Start early…

  10. Extra curricular activities • Invite guests for seminars and lectures? • External communications plan? • Map resources available and assign responsibilities and execute.
