  2. I. Looking for a King • The idea of a king was not a new one for Israel. See Genesis 1:26-28. • Abraham had been promised. See Genesis 17:6. • God said of Sarah: See Genesis 17:16 • The promise to Jacob in Genesis 35:11. • Judah was given the promise that a ruler would come from his line in Genesis 49:10

  3. I. Looking for a King • Mosesanticipated a coming king for Israel. See Deuteronomy 17:14-20. Their kings were to: • Write for himself a copy of the law. • Read it daily so that he might fear the Lord and live righteously. • Avoid accumulating horses, wealth, and wives.

  4. II. King David: King of Israel • King David was the anticipated king. Remember that Naomi, Ruth, and Boaz were from Bethlehem. • He was chosen because of his heart. See 1 Samuel 16:7 and Acts 13:22. • God made a covenant with David. He would have a dynasty. See 2 Samuel 7:11b-17. It would include: • A House: an undying family line • A Throne: royal authority • A Kingdom: a people

King David: King of Israel • An example of Old Testament Prophecy. • Solomonis the son who would build the Temple. • Another Son’s throne would last forever! • David understood that this covenant looked forward to a divine King. See Psalm 110:1 and Acts 2:34. • David responds with worship. See 2 Samuel 7:18-29.

  6. III. King Jesus: King of Kings • The “Anointed One”: Prophecies of the Messiah King • Jesus is referred to as the “Son of David” 16 times in the Gospels, 9 times in Matthew. • Jesus’ birth and life connected to the promise to David.

  9. IV. Applications and Implications • God provides prophetic fulfillment to assure me that He is true and sovereign. • God provided a prophetic roadmap leading straight from David to Jesus. Jesus is unmistakably the promised Messiah, my king. • God fulfills His promises. • Mary and Joseph are biblical examples of walking by faith and not by sight. We can emulate their faith today.

  10. IV. Applications and Implications • Angels serve as God’s messengers and are really cool! • I can be awed by the sovereign and carefully crafted genealogy of David and Jesus. There are no surprises to God. • Because Jesus fulfilled so many prophesies, He is who He says He is—my Savior and King. • A King rules His way. I should submit to His rule over my life now.

  11. IV. Applications and Implications • Israel refused to believe that Jesus was their King. I will learn from their mistake. • I can trust the supernatural inspiration of the Holy Scriptures because only God could fulfill such prophecies so many years later. Therefore, the Scriptures have authority over me. • Even the grandest of kings like David rightly bows in humble worship when he encounters the extravagant grace of God. Have I really bowed my heart in prayer and worship lately?
