  1. Fostering teamwork, effective research, intellectual rigour and digital literacy On-line Team Research Repository Sharon Korek Karen Clark School of Law LTI conference May 2012

  2. Research Repository

  3. Weller - Delivering Learning on the Net (2002) • Collaborative activities can promote • reflection • active learning • communication skills • deeper understanding • exposure to different ideas • a facility in group working (itself desirable)

  4. Weller- continued Possible complications of collaborative work: • a reluctance and resistance from those who prefer to work individually • personality clashes • time consuming negotiation of roles • how to cope with those who drop out • failure of the group preoccupies • loss of independence and flexibility

  5. ... it didn’t really add any value for me.....I like to work independently Others might value joint research more than I do.... I thought it was a great idea....any encouragement to meet has to be good and more realistic in the real world project teams meet up in often competitive situations to pool ideas and deliver a result bigger than the sum of the parts ...it got people talking and working together and those relationships have continued..... ..I enjoyed the challenge but found it frustrating with some of my team mates who lacked contribution (sic)...maybe should attach marks.... ....really good idea and should have reduced amount of research time.....but...by the time anyone else in my group got around to posting anything, my essay was already done and dusted....

  6. Student feedback summary • Employability aspect – teamwork • Sum of whole is greater than the parts • Enjoyment – novelty/challenge • Fostered good partnerships with peers • Unequal contribution: piggy-backing on others’ efforts • Loss of flexibility, independence

  7. Where next? • Transferable skills? • Mixed Campus and Distance Learning groups • Staff Student repositories • Other possibilities
