Bellwork – 3/16/15 List the components of whole blood.
1. Circulatory System • Blood • Plasma- 90% H2O • Cells • White blood cells- immunity • Red blood cells- carry O2 & CO2; hemoglobin carries the molecules • Platelets- for clotting
Bellwork – 3/17/15 What parts of your body make up the circulatory system? • Blood • Blood vessels • Heart
Blood Vessels • Arteries- carry blood AWAY from the heart • Veins- carry blood back to the heart • Capillaries- smallest vessels; where O2, CO2 , nutrients and waste move in or out of the blood.
The Human Heart • 4 Chambers • Atria/atrium- small chambers on the top of the heart; collect blood as it enters • Ventricles- large chambers on the bottom of the heart; pump blood out of the heart • Valves- one way doors; make the sound of the heartbeat
1. Respiratory System • Function: To supply oxygen to all the parts of your body. It accomplishes this through breathing: inhaling oxygen-rich air and exhaling air filled with carbon dioxide, which is a waste gas.
2. Respiratory System • Trachea: tube from nose and mouth to lungs • Lungs • Bronchi- the 2 branches of the lungs • Bronchioles- smaller branches in each lung • Alveoli- small sacks surrounded by capillaries; gas exchange happens here
3. Excretory System • Function: Maintains homeostasis by getting rid of waste. • Organs • Lungs- eliminate CO2 • Skin- eliminates H2O, salts and urea by sweating • Kidneys- remove waste from blood, maintain pH, regulate H2O content
