  2. Air Force Materiel Command • Headquartered at Wright-Patterson the command conducts: • Research & development • Test & evaluation • Acquisition management services and logistics support necessary to keep Air Force weapon systems ready for war

  3. Community Liaison Program • 40 community leaders representing each of 10 communities where AFMC has installations or a major organization • Meets twice annually to: • Hear updates on important AFMC and Air Force issues • Share information with the AFMC commander • Brainstorm ideas of mutual benefit across the command

  4. Community Liaison Program The five CLP subgroups that reflect AFMC’s and AF’s 5 priorities are: • Acquisition reform and community support • Telling the AFMC story • Recapitalization • Energy use and conservation • Education and workforce development

Workforce • At Wright-Patterson: • 30% of the current workforce hold STEM related positions • Projected STEM job growth over the next five years is 180 jobs per year • Average civilian attrition is 700-1,000 every year • 60% of the workforce is retirement eligible • Translation: 7,800 people are currently eligible to retire

  7. The Challenge • Support the AF in attracting and retaining top talent with STEM background • AF can’t do it alone • Must start early to prepare a pool of talent to draw from • Connect AF leaders to community programs designed to meet the challenge

  9. Inspiring the Next Generation In the schools… …or at AEDC Spark Read across America “I encourage you to seek, find, and exploit opportunities to make today’s students tomorrow’s ‘Legends of AEDC.’” Minds in Motion

  10. Evening at Arnold Motivating teachers to inspire their students • Targeting math and science educators from local counties • Enjoyed a twilight tour of AEDC and dinner in test facility • Giving back & strengthening bond with local educators • Two events in 2010 inspiring 81 educators

  11. SPARK Aspiring to spark minds into motion • Elementary level (3rd-5th) • Short tour of supersonic wind tunnel • Fun, hands-on scientific demos about basics of flight • Aimed at generating interest in math and science at early age • Eight tours in 2010 inspiring 349 students and teachers.

Minds in Motion Aspiring to keep minds in motion • All 8th grade students in Franklin and Coffee counties • Promotes STEM-based educational paths and careers • Aimed at developing future technical work force (public or private sectors) • Eight tours in 2010 inspiring 1,126 students and teachers

Inspiring the next generation • 15 additional education-centered tours, 488 students -- high school classes, ROTC and Engineer for a Day • Focus is on five surrounding counties, but help anyone who asks • Local civic and professional organizations lend labor and funds when available. • 2010 Impact: 1,707 students, 193 teachers • Supported by 81 scientists/ engineers and 207 volunteers • Program funded by center FY 07-10 • Center received funds from DoD’s National Defense Education Program in late FY10. Funds pending for FY11, and FY12 funding uncertain. • AEDC prime contactor, ATA has been carrying lion’s share of work load until AF can hire NDEP manager.
