2. History • Begun in 1909: Metropolitan Sewage Commission • Resident complaints • Odors, fires, strange colors • Gradual increase in scope • Geographic increase of stations • Bacteria sampling begun in 1914. • Surveys performed every summer beginning in 1914

3. History • Twelve original stations • Sampled on an irregular basis until 1914 • Dissolved oxygen, temperature, Secchi, percent seawater

4. Harbor Survey Expansion • From 1909 – 1985 increased to 43 stations • Stations added in many problem areas throughout Harbor. • Parameters expanded to include; nutrients, total coliform, fecal coliform.

5. Harbor Survey Expansion • 1985 • Increase to 53 Stations(program peak), • Year round monitoring. • Additional parameters: chlorophyll a, expanded nutrient species

9. Current Program • 33 stations covering open waters of NY Harbor, Hudson and WLIS • Rotating tributary stations covering major tributaries • Full suite of WQ parameters; CTD, DO, chl, nutrients(NPC), physical measurements

10. Future Expansion • Remote monitoring: • Fixed stations, monitoring 24/7 • Real-time bacteria results • Better integration with regional programs
