1900 • The Russian scientist named EdurdovichTsiokovsky formulated the mathematics needed of modern astronauts. He showed space travel was possible by the means of rockets.
1914 • An American scientist Robert H. Goddard patented the first rocket and is credited with creating and building the first liquid fuel rocket.
1926 • Goddard (still American) launches the first rocket proving his ideas on space travel and missiles.
1930 • V-2 spacecraft was made and was used as a missile by Nazi Germany in WW II. Then used by the USA and the Soviet Union in their space programs.
1944 • V-2 spacecraft left Earths atmosphere from Nazi Germany going four times the speed of sound. The first strike with the weapon was on Paris.
1954 • American Viking rocket broke the record for highest altitude reached which was 159 miles above the earth. The design was taken from the Germen rocket the V-2.
1957 • The sputnik program is the commonly known name of various robotic spacecraft missions launched by the soviet union. The first of them sputnik 1 was first man made object to orbit earth.
1961 • On April 12 1961 soviet Yuri Gagarin became the first man in space. Launching to orbit in the vostok 3KA-3.
1961 • The Redstone rocket was the first large American ballistic missile it was launched in 1961.
1967 • The lunar orbiter program was a series of five unarmed lunar orbiter missions launched by the USA. The pictures helped NASA choose where to land Apollo 11
1969 • Apollo 11 was the first space mission to land a man on the moon. Neal Armstrong was the first man to walk on the moon. Then a famous quote was invented, “one small step for man one large step for man kind.
1971 • Salyut 1 was the first space station of any kind launched by the USSR. When the crew was returning a pressure-equalization vale opened prematurely killing all three.
1971 • Mariner 9 was a NASA space orbiter that was the first probe to orbit another planet. It took pictures of mars.
1972 • NASA’s Apollo 16 was the tenth manned mission in the Apollo program. It brought back 94.7 kilograms of lunar samples.
1973 • USA’s first space station called skylab was a lab in space. It was launched by a modified Saturn V rocket.
1973 • The first US space station launched was called sky lab. It did many experiments in space.
1976 • Viking 1 was the first successful space mission to mars. It took pictures of the planets surface.
1979 • Skylab The USA’s first space station receives pictures from the sun showing the corona.
1981 • Columbia was NASA’s reusable space shuttle. It completed 27 missions before it exploded.
1983 • NASA’s second space shuttle orbiter to be placed in orbit. It took a photo of Earth showing Australia.
1986 • Mir is a Russian space station that was a lab in space. I did reteach on human biology.
1990 • NASA launched a space telescope called the hubble space telescope. It is considered a valuable research tool.
1995 • NASA’s Galileo was a unmanned spacecraft to study Jupiter. It also did the first asteroid fly by.
1996 • The American spacecraft Pathfinder landed on mars and released the mars rover named sojourner.
1998 • The international space station is a research facility in space. It can be seen by the naked eye and is by far the largest cross-sectional of any other space station. It is set to be completed later this year
