  1. Energy Efficiency:H-E-B’s Perspective Presented January 19, 2011 at “A Conservative Approach to Texas’ Energy Future: Efficiency, Jobs, and Competitiveness” Austin, Texas Bob Manning, P.E. Director of Energy & Industrial Facilities H-E-B

  2. Background • H-E-B now operates over 300 retail stores in Texas and northern Mexico, and also operates food manufacturing and distribution facilities on seven campuses. • Utility expenses run >$130 million annually, of which about $112 million is for electricity.

  3. Energy Usage and Cost Trends

  4. Our Goals • Existing Stores Goal • Reduce usage by 20% between 2006 and 2011 • Currently at 14% reduction • New Stores Goal • 30% usage reduction between 2006 and 2011 • Realized a 19% reduction through 2009

  5. Energy Efficiency • To H-E-B, the pursuit of energy efficiency is a powerful way to eliminate waste and inefficiency. • Elimination of energy waste allows us to deliver the same goods and services to customers at lower cost, while maintaining profitability and competitiveness. • Many of our customers desperately need this, so that they can also buy gas and pay other bills. • Energy projects have to compete for capital that could build a new store, but the company sees benefit in optimizing our entire operation.
