Greenland is the largest island in the world with an area of 2.2 million. km². It is located northeast of Canada, but historically, politically and economically it is a country closely associated with Europe. Only 15 percent of the territory is not permanently covered with ice. All towns and villages are located by the coast. Ice cover, sometimes up to 3 km thick, presses the center of Greenland up to 300 m below sea level. The highest point of the island is Mount Gunnbjorn with a height of 3700 m. The island has about 56,000 inhabitants, most of whom are Inuit. The Inuit relocation took place at the end of the first millennium. The island was discovered in 875 by the Viking sailor GunnbjørnUlfsson. Greenland were a colony since 1380 and it gained independence in 1953. The head of state is the Danish monarch, currently Margrethe II of Denmark. The official language is Greenlandic.
