Character Traits of Buck • What did Buck want after he killed Spitz? Buck wanted the lead dog position.
Characterization • Why did Buck believe he deserved the position of lead dog? Buck believed he deserved the lead dog position because he had earned it by killing Spitz.
Character Traits of Buck • As lead dog, what character traits does Buck display? Buck was a strong leader. Buck took pride in his work. He was a swift disciplinarian, and he would not tolerate laziness among the dogs. He made each dog do his fair share of work.
Character Traits of Dave • What type of sled dog was Dave? Dave was hard working and enjoyed his work.
Character Traits of Dave • What happened to Dave? Dave became sick on the trail, but tried to work until he could no longer stand. As sick as he was, Dave refused to rest. He wanted to die in the traces.
Character Traits of Dave • What happened to Dave? When Dave became too sick to work, and could no longer stand on his feet, the Scotch Half Breed shot him to put him out of his misery.
What part of the plot is this? This the middle part of the story (the Rising Action) where the dogs worked every day, and everyday was the same. Other than Buck taking the lead dog position and Dave’s death, nothing remarkable happened in this chapter.
Part 3 - The Idiom • Idioms are spoken phrases that cannot be found in the dictionary. An idiom is an expression that means something other than the literal meanings of its individual words.
Out of the Woods • When we say out of the woods, we mean it is safe or out of danger. • Example: When a person has recovered from an illness, he or she is safe or out of danger and therefore is out of the woods.
Out of the Woods • Eric was recovering from pneumonia, he was still not out of the woods. The doctors said that he would have to take it easy and avoid exposure to cold, since he was not yet safe or out of danger.
Lesson Review • We have read and listened to Call of the Wild Chapter 4. We discussed Buck’s character traits. We also discussed the plot sequence.
