  1. Welcome to: Cell Regulation and Signaling Or Cell Signaling and Regulation KMB613

  2. Course taught by experts in their fields!

  3. Requirements for Zápočet • Present an journal club article • Mandatory attendace of journal club • You are allowed ONE absence • Please come see me if you have think you will be absent for a extended time during the semester • Foreigners going home • Research stays

  4. Guidelines for journal club presentation 1 of 3 • Journal club starts 5-10 minutes after the end of the lecture!!! • Not at 17.15 as stated in the official schedule • Presenters MUST be here 5-10 minutes afterwards ready to present otherwise they did not fulfill the requirement!!! • Therefore it is in your interest to show up for the lecture before your presentation because it ends when it ends • Do not frantically work on your presentation DURING the lecture-I will kick you out. • Bottom line – last second for finishing your presentation is at the start of the class!

  5. Guidelines for journal club presentation 2 of 3 • Many of the papers have supplementary data • Please look at this • Many have films or summary schemes that should be included in your presentations if they work better than the static figures! • You don’t have to present all the figures, just the ones that convey the main points • The presentation should be 20-30 minutes long

  6. Guidelines for journal club presentation 3 of 3 • The presentation should be about 20 minutes long • You should give a brief intro to the topic or techniques used if specialized (eg not Western, Northern, real-time PCR, etc.) • You should discuss the main aims and conclusions of paper • You should discuss the relevance of the paper and say why you think it was accepted into Science, Nature, Cell, etc.

  7. Final exam for your grade • Multiple choice exam • 2 questions from each lecture • The tests will become increasingly difficult with each successive test term! • The earlier the term, the easier the test!

  8. Extra points for the test • 3+ points on test for asking questions during journal club. • Number of journal clubs for participation • You must reach a threshold number that I will say on last day of class • 3+ points for pop quizzes • Yes, there will be surprise quizzes about the journal articles. • One question about article-either you get it right or wrong • Threshold number at end of class • 3, 2, 1+ for best, 2nd best and 3rd best presentation determined by me at end of course
