Why Are Mangroves Important? • Mangroves protect coastlines and prevent erosion by collecting sediment from the rivers and streams and slowing down the flow of water. • They protect shorelines from damaging storm and hurricane winds, waves, and floods. They also maintain water quality and clarity by filtering pollutants and trapping sediments originating from land.
Threats to Mangroves • Many thousands of acres of mangrove forest have been destroyed to make way for rice paddies, rubber trees, palm oil plantations, and other forms of agriculture. The fertilizers and chemicals used by farmers pollute the mangrove water supply. Despite their resilience, mangroves can tolerate only a limited amount of pollution without dying.
Threats to Mangroves • Mangroves are also being cut down for other purposes besides agriculture. Mangrove wood is being used for building material, fencing, and fuel. It also yields valuable, high-quality charcoal.
