What is science Fiction? • Science Fiction is a genre of fiction dealing with imaginary but more of less plausible content such as future setting, futuristic science and technology, space travel, aliens, and paranormal abilities.
What is not Science Fiction? • Something should not count as Science Fiction, unless the science is necessary to it. Science fiction is not a unitary genre or form, hence cannot be encompassed in a single definition.

Science Fiction Realistic Fiction Realistic fiction is a story that is rooted in reality, meaning it can really happen The characters, events, settings, etc. are made up, but it is possible for everything in the story to happen Settings of realistic fiction are usually in modern, contemporary, time The plots carry real-life situations that people face on a daily basis These stories are typically narrated in the first person • Theme, essential message, or idea of work is hardly ever stated directly • The reader has to figure it out from details in the story • These typed of details usually come from titles, settings, or plots • The main message in science fiction is usually about the dangers of technology, or characters who live in the future • Conflicts in the story are clues to the theme • Some may be internal taking a place with in a character
