In collaboration with its Committees on Accreditation, CAAHEP reviews and accredits more than 2000 educational programs in twenty-one (21) health science occupations across the United States and Canada. Prior to 1994, accreditation in most of these disciplines was a function of a Committee within the American Medical Association (AMA). When the AMA decided to turn over accreditation of these programs to another entity, CAAHEP was born. Currently, CAAHEP accredits programs in the following allied health disciplines: Anesthesiologist AssistantAthletic TrainerCardiovascular TechnologyCytotechnologyDiagnostic Medical SonographyEmergency Medical Technician-ParamedicElectroneurodiagnostic TechnologistHealth Information Administration/TechnicianKinesiotherapyMedical AssistantMedical IllustratorOphthalmic Medical Technologist/TechnicianOrthotic and Prosthetic PractitionerPerfusionRespiratory TherapySpecialist in Blood Bank TechnologySurgical Technology

  9. What You Get for the Money You Pay • NCOPE uses the $1,200 fee: • Tracking residents: computer tracking and hard file tracking • Resident Patch for the resident to use on their lab coats • Reports are provided to ABC on resident that successfully complete • Provide reports to Academy on research projects • A certificate of completion is issued at the end of the residency on request • Resident Director Workshops • Operations of NCOPE activity

  10. Site Visits in Coordination with ABC • NCOPE coordinates with ABC for on-site visits. • When an ABC site surveyor accepts an assignment NCOPE identifies residency programs • You will be provided the handbook of items to prepare for review of the residency

  11. NCOPE’s Web Site • Listing of all accredited residency sites • Sites have the ability to write/edit profile of their program • Identify Hiring Status for residents seeking a position

  12. Residency Profiles on the Web

  13. Quarterly Newsletter

  14. New Director’s Regional Network (DRN) • NCOPE believes the advantages of this program are as follows: • Creates link between NCOPE and the local "grass roots" residency programs • Helps with defining what the expectations are for the resident, residency director, and residency site • Provides directors with a link to NCOPE • Provides assistance in areas of sponsoring a residency • Regional Directors all have experience as an NCOPE residency site

  15. Eight Regions in the US

  16. Tips to Remember • NCOPE has tremendous resources available especially on-line • Quarterly evaluations must be performed on the resident • Final evaluations must identify the resident’s successful completion • Be honest and fair on the evaluations through out the process • Residents will not be “released” as completing a residency and therefore unable to take the ABC exams if NCOPE does not have three quarterly forms, one final form, research title and project/paper, technical assessment form and the resident’s evaluation of the program

  17. On The Horizon • Movement to master’s degree for entry-level • Changes to the residency program • Application • Research component • Name change to “Directed Study” • Due Process for residents and sites
