  3. FUTURE-READY CORE • Ninth graders entering high school in 2010-2011 year and later complete what is now the Future-ready core academic requirement to graduate high school.

  4. English 4 English I, II, III, & IV Mathematics 4 Algebra I, Geometry, Algebra II or Integrated Math I, II, and III 4th Math course to be aligned with the student’s post high school plan Science 3 A Physical Science Course, Biology, Earth/Environmental Science Social Studies 3 Civics and Economics, US History, World History Healthful Living 1 Second Language-Notrequired for graduation BUT required to meet minimum application requirements for a UNC. Requirements Cont: • Specific Electives 6 Credits required 2 electives of any combination from either: Arts Education (Dance, -Career & Technical Education (CTE) Music, Theatre Arts, Visual -Arts Education Arts) -Second Language At least 1 credit in an Arts 4 Elective credits strongly recommended Discipline (four course concentration) from one of the Additional Credits 5 Following: -Career & Technical Education (CTE) JROTC -Arts Education (dance, music, theater arts, visual arts), or any other subject area Mathematics, Science, Social Studies, English Or Cross-disciplinary)

  6. High School Courses taken at the Middle School • Students in grades 6-8 will receive graduation credit of high school Mathematics courses passed in middle school

North Carolina Academic Scholars RecognitionTo receive this special recognition students must:-Complete all the requirements of this North Carolina Academic Scholars Program-Have an overall four year un-weighted grade point average of 3.500-Complete all requirements for a North Carolina high schooldiploma

Middle School Mathematics Courses for High School CreditFrequently Asked Questions • Which course(s) must students successfully complete in order to earn one unit of high school credit? • Students must successfully complete Algebra I, Geometry, Algebra 2, or another higher level math course. • Is there a placement exam? • No. Students who successfully complete mathematics courses may be placed in the next level of mathematics. • Are students required to take an exam? • Yes. Students enrolled in Algebra I, Geometry, or Algebra 2 must score level III or IV on the EOC exam. Students enrolled in any higher level mathematics course will take a teacher-made final exam.

Middle School Mathematics Courses for High School CreditFrequently Asked Questions Cont: • Can a student repeat a mathematics course for credit at the high school level? • No. While a student may repeat a course that he/she has passed, he/she may not receive credit for the same course twice. The one exception is Algebra I Plus. Since the content of Algebra I Plus incorporates portions of the Geometry content, Algebra I Plus may be taken after Algebra I for elective credit if the student feels a need to strengthen his/her algebra skills. • If a student earns credit at the middle school level, will he/she have to take additional courses at the high school level as well? • Yes. Students who have earned one (or more) units of credit in middle school and wish to graduate on the College/University Course of Study or under the Future Ready Core requirements must take three (or fewer) additional mathematics units at the high school level, for a total of four math credits.

  10. Middle School Mathematics Courses for High School CreditFrequently Asked Questions Cont: • Will the grades earned in mathematics courses appear on the high school transcript? • Yes. The grade will be listed on the transcript under Grade 8 with one unit of credit. • Will the grade earned be included the student’s high school grade point average (GPA)? • No. Only courses taken during the high school years will be included the student’s grade point average.

  11. Graduation ProjectThe Graduation project is optional and it depends on your high school. This project prepares students for future college level presentations.

Promotion Requirement for 9th Grade6 credits Students must pass a total of 6 credits in the following classes to go to the 10th grade. • One credit in English I • Two credits in the areas of Mathematics, Social Studies, or Science, and • Three additional credits. (The next slide shows school that are exceptional to the above promotion requirements)

  15. Grading Scale (based on a seven point scale) • A=93-100 • B=85-92 • C=77-84 • D=70-76 • F=less than 70 • I=Incomplete • WP=Withdrawal, no penalty • WF=Withdrawal with an F • FF=Failed for violation of attendance policy

Early Graduation High School students can graduate in 6 semesters or less if the following requirements are met: • Show satisfactory mastery of high school academic skills and concepts. • Show a need for early graduation • Meet the graduation course and testing requirement that were effective the year of entering 9th grade for the first time. **The Principal and his committee considers requests and deny or approve an early graduation based on the criteria stated above.

  17. 6 Credits in Language including-4 credits in English and 2credits in another language 4 credits in Mathematics in any of the following combinations: Alg 1 & 11, Geo, and 1 credit beyond Alg 11 Alg 1 & 11, and two credits beyond Alg 11 Intg Mathematics 1, 11, & 111 and one credit beyond Intg Math 111 3 credits in Science including: At least 1 credit in life or biological science (eg: biology) At least 1 credit in Physical science (eg: physical science, chemistry, Physics) At least one laboratory course 2 credits in Social Studies including: 1 credit in United States history** UNC Systems Admission Requirements (MINIMUM)

National Collegiate Athletic Association Division I college or university • Graduate from a high school • Complete the 16 courses listed below 4 years of English, 3 years of Math (Algebra I or higher), 2 years of Natural/Physical science, 1 year of additional English, mathematics or natural/physical science, 2 years of social science, 4 years of additional courses.   24. All Wake County 8th grade students promoted to the 9th grade, are required to register at a Wake County Public High School regardless of whether you will be applying to a Charter or Private School or moving out of county.
