  8. Situation Analysis • There have been a number of dire stories recently in the local newspapers regarding 2010-2011 funding for CPS • They are based on Ron Huberman delivering a Fiscal Year 2011 Budget Briefing to principals (posted on the CPS website and www.suntimes.com) which stated: • Based on the state’s funding plan, CPS has a $700 million budget deficit • The district needs to hope for the best, but plan for the worst • A contingency plan has been put in place • The hope is that the state will close the budget gap, and the cuts will be lessened (if not entirely alleviated) • CPS will actively revisit this issue as more information becomes available

Budget Process • According to Ron Huberman's presentation to the principals, principals will receive budget numbers on Monday, March 29 • The LSC is currently working on the biannual planning process of SIPAAA (School Improvement Plan for Advancing Academic Achievement).  The budget is part of the SIPAAA • We know there are scary headlines in the news, but we won’t know the exact situation for Mayer until we receive this information • Historically, the Mayer principals have used their entire budget to purchase teachers and staff, which helps reduce class sizes and helps the school run more efficiently • Friends of Mayer supplements to the extent possible and also covers such expenses as the copier, office supplies, field trip buses, sports fees, etc

Oscar Mayer Action Steps This was not an unexpected situation – it’s why we had a Pledge Drive which we expect to ultimately raise over $100,000, and why we need to insure the walkathon is a success! • Read Ron Huberman's presentation, and be informed on the issues. • Attend the next LSC meeting on Wednesday, April 7 at 6:00 pm • Contact our elected officials.  Several "Friends of" groups are working on a coordinated effort and will share information when they have a plan • Ask companies for donations to sponsor the Mayer walkathon.  T-shirt logo deadline (for a $500 contribution) is April 7 – we need to raise as much as we can. We can worry, or we can go to work.

  12. Walkathon Progress to Date • Currently, we have volunteers asking over 250 companies for sponsorship. There is still time to ask • Logo deadline for t-shirts ($500 donation) is April 10 • Logo deadline for banner ($250 donation) is April 16 • To date, we have received $2,285 which includes both company donations and some eager volunteers who have already started asking their extended families for donations • Pledge sheets will be sent home the week of April 5

  21. FOM Elections (1) • The FOM board is elected by the Oscar Mayer Magnet School community. • Its members serve a one-year term, and being a board member means making a commitment to: • Being involved in school initiatives • Attending monthly meetings • Fundraising • Allocating the discretionary funds at the group’s disposal. • No restrictions on who is eligible to run (parents, staff, community, current FOM Board, others are all eligible)

FOM Elections (2) • The Friends of Mayer board will include a minimum of 11 and a maximum of 21 members. • Looking at our by-laws, this means: • If we have 11-21 members to start a school year, we are not adding members during the year to reach 21, we are only adding new members if the number drops below 11. • If we have fewer than 11 board members and someone wishes to join the board, that decision is made by the FOM board (the by-laws aren't specific, but I would interpret this to mean majority vote of a quorum at next possible meeting).

FOM Elections (3) • Actual election (if necessary) to take place at the April FOM meeting (scheduled for April 28). • Each candidate permitted to make a 2-3 minute speech • If a candidate cannot be present, a written communication may be issued on his or her behalf • Up to 20 minutes for question and answer from attendees • Everyone present may vote…no absentee ballots.  You may run for a Board spot without being present at the meeting, but you cannot vote without being present. • Votes to be cast by secret ballot.  Vote for up to 21 FOM Board members • Note that in accordance with the by-laws, actual positions within the organization (President, Vice President, Secretary, Treasurer, etc.) are voted on by the FOM Board after election. • Votes will be counted after the meeting by a neutral party.  All candidates are permitted to stay to oversee the counting of votes. • Term of office runs from July 1, 2010 – June 30, 2011.
