What is Islam • Islam is a second largest religion in the world • Islam originated in Mecca, which is today Arabia Saudi, in 610 A.D • Islam calls for the same truth that God revealed to all His prophets throughout history • Islam is just like any other divine religion that comes from the same source

Five Pillars • The Declaration of Faith • Prayer- Muslims perform five obligatory prayers a day • Zakat- or Alms and charitable giving(Giving money to the poor is REQUIRED, not optional) • Fasting- Muslims fast from first light until sunset one lunar month (Ramadan) a year • Pilgrimage- or Hajj to Mecca (an obligation for those who are physically and financially able once in a lifetime)

  11. Sources of Islamic Doctrine • Quran (from root meaning read or study) • Hadith (tradition): is a body of literature developed roughly 200 years after Prophet Muhammad's death (632 A.D.) that accordingly reports his actions and sayings. • Sharia (way): Codified Islamic Law

  12. Islam today • There are fifty five Muslim countries spread around the world: in Asia, the Middle East, and Africa as well as a considerable number of Muslims who live in Europe and United States

  14. Myth • Muslims believe it is o.k. to kill civilians in a holy war (“jihad”). Reality • Only Muslim extremists believe this. (Just like most Christians do NOT believe in bombing abortion clinics.)

  15. What is jihad • Islam is not addicted to war, and jihad is not one of its "pillars”. • Jihad in Arabic language does not mean "holy war”. It means "struggle” or “strive”. • It is the difficult effort needed to put God's will into practice at every level.

  16. What is jihad • According to the recent interview with AbdallaElhafiz , a director of Islamic Association of Erie(IAE) Erie, Pennsylvania, Jihad means to struggle and strive against evil,(thought or actions), and It is a defensive war (a war against the illegitimate desires and evil)

What is jihad • God does not allow harm of civilian, and requests the protection of women, children and the elderly during war (Q. 4:96; 9: 91; 48: 16,17) • “If any one slew a person--unless it be for murder or for spreading mischief in the land--it would be as if he slew the whole people; and if anyone saved a life, it would be as if he saved the life of the whole people.” (Q. 5:32) • “You shall feed and protect prisoners of war, and you shall not expect a reward” (Q. 4: 25,36; 5:24) • Thus, the only permissible war in the Quran is one of self-defense, Muslims cannot kill unarmed (civilian), and they have to protect prisoners of war.

Islam and other faith • Like the Torah, the Quran permits retaliation eye for eye, tooth for tooth. • But, like the Gospels, it says “it is meritorious to forgo revenge in a spirit of charity (Q. 5: 45) • Acknowledges Adam, Noah, Abraham, Ishmael, Isaac, Jacob, Joseph, Moses, David, Solomon, Zachariah, Jesus, John the Baptist, and others as the “the good prophets of God” • A special place for Jesus and Mary (e.g., Q. 3:45,46; 4:156-158; 19:1-98) • Accepts that Mary’s conception is from God’s soul.
