Emily Michele Barth EDG-602 Course Project July 17, 2009 Geometric Fun For 4th Grade
Four Planning Questions for Instruction • What will students learn? • Which strategies will provide evidence of student learning? • Which strategies will help students acquire and integrate learning? • Which strategies will help students practice review and apply learning? Marzano, R.J. (1998). A theory-based meta-analysis of research on instruction. Mid-continent Research for Education and Learning. Retrieved July 1, 2009, from http://www.mcrel.org/instructionmetaanalysis.
Nine Categories of Instructional Strategies That Affect Achievement Marzano, 1998
Summary • This unit will incorporate 21st century learning to teach the fourth grade KY mathematics content for geometry.
Summary • Students will be participating in whole groups, small groups, and individual practice to learn about geometry.
Summary • Students will use hands on materials, projects, written work, as well as technology to practice and master the content.
Materials and Resources • Trailblazers 4th grade math series unit 2 • Geometric shapes • Protractor • Computer • TV Viewer • Paper • Pencil • Overhead projector • Copies of Venn Diagram
Materials and Resources • Computer & Internet Access • Study Island • www.studyisland.com • United Streaming • www.unitedstreaming.com • Kidspiration math lessons • www.kidspiration.com • Interactive mathematics activities • www.cut-the-knot.org • Links Learning • www.linkslearning.org
What will students learn? Procedure • Students will view PowerPoint Presentation to view expectations and objectives of geometry unit. • Students will complete the KWHL chart to activate prior knowledge as a whole class. • Students will set individual and class goals using the KWHL chart. • Students will view United Streaming videos to preview and learn about geometry.
Procedurescontinued • Students will work individually, small groups, and whole groups to practice material. • Students will complete homework practice on the individual skills learned. • Students will utilize internet resources to practice and review.
What will students learn? • Students will know what they are responsible for learning by understanding the clear learning objectives: • Students will understand and implement geometric terms by using a KWHL chart • Students will review geometry vocabulary using a Kidspiration web • Students will compare basic two-dimensional shapes by using a Venn Diagram • Students will compare basic three-dimensional shapes by using a Venn Diagram • Students will identify lines of symmetry using pictures of shapes created in Microsoft Word
Strategies that Provide Evidence of Student Learning Assessment • Students will be assessed beginning with a KWHL chart designed in Kidspiration. This will serve as a pre-assessment as well a learning and working assessment throughout the unit. • Teacher generated Study Island assessment • Teacher generated Open Response with rubric created in Rubistar • Three dimensional geometric world project graded with a rubric created in Rubistar
Strategies that Provide Evidence of Student Learning Providing Feedback and Recognition • Students will be provided with feedback with graded work and rubrics • Students will be recognized with final test/open response posted in the classroom. • Students will be recognized with displays of geometric world throughout school and pictures on school website.
Strategies to Help Students Acquire and Integrate Learning Procedure: • Students will view PowerPoint Presentation • As a whole group students will activate prior knowledge when filling out the KWHL chart when the geometry unit is introduced. • As a whole group students will continue to complete the KWHL chart as the geometry unit progresses.
Strategies to Help Students Acquire and Integrate Learning • Students will view United Streaming video:
Strategies to Help Students Acquire and Integrate Learning • Students will review, study, take notes on Geometry vocabulary terms in Kidspiration Web. • Students will view 2-dimensional shapes using an overhead projector. • Students will identify lines (perpendicular, parallel, and intersecting), angels ( acute, right, obtuse), sides using 2-dimensional shapes as a whole group.
Strategies to Help Students Acquire and Integrate Learning • Students will break into small groups to make observations, identify, and have hands on practice with 2-dimensional shapes. • Students will view 3-dimensional shapes using an overhead projector. • Students will identify lines (perpendicular, parallel, and intersecting), angels ( acute, right, obtuse), sides, edges, faces, bases using 3-dimensional shapes as a whole group.
Strategies to Help Students Acquire and Integrate Learning • Students will break into small groups to make observations, identify, and have hands on practice with 3-dimensional shapes. • Students will work with a partner to compare and contrast 2-dimensional and 3-dimensional shapes using a Venn Diagram from Crayons to Computers.
Strategies to Help Students Acquire and Integrate Learning • Students will view Links Learning video:
Strategies to Help Students Acquire and Integrate Learning • Students will practice lines of symmetry with Study Island made homework. • Students will be provided with classwork to practice. • All content will be supplemented along with additional practice using 4th grade Trailblazers Geometric Investigations Unit 2. • Students will design a 3-dimensional world using toothpicks and gumdrops.
Strategies to Help Students Acquire and Integrate Learning • Students will take geometry test generated on Study Island. • Students will complete a teacher generated open response. • Students will review and analyze all final assessments individually and whole class. • Students will continue to review geometry throughout the year.
Strategies to Help Students Practice, Review, and Apply Learning Procedure: • Students will learn the geometry material in whole group, small groups, and individual practice. • Students will have homework practice of the content introduced in class as well as review of prior geometric concepts. • Students will create a geometric world project
Strategies to Help Students Practice, Review, and Apply Learning Procedure: • Students will practice using online software, internet sites, and other computer games. • Students will view and have access to geometric learning videos.
