  1. 2014 LBAT Japan What is LBAT? LBAT (Language for Business And Technology) programs are GA Tech faculty-led summer intensive study-abroad program. In 2014 LBAT Japan offers an 8-week program and a 10-week programs and students earn 9 credit hours (8-week program) or 12 credit hours (10-week program.

  2. 2014 LBAT Japan Location: Beppu (in Oita Prefecture) Duration: May 13 – July 13, 2014 (8-week program) 1May 13 – July 27, 2014 (10-week program) 1 Application Fee: $200 (non-refundable) Program Fee: $3,900 (8-week program) 1,2 $4,300 (10-week program) 1,2 1 Subject to change 2 Non-refundable after we make a payment to our host university in Japan Summer Session Tuitions & Fees are NOT included in the program fee. Application Deadline: Feb. 15, 2014 Apply at OIE site (http://www.oie.gatech.edu/procedures) & pay the application fee and submit a transcript.You will be notified of the result of your applicationapproximately 7-10 days after the deadline.

  4. Program Contents - VERY Intensive • You will take three Japanese language classes for a total of 9 credit hours in 8 weeks or takefour courses for 12 credit hours in 10 weeks. All applicable to major/minor/certificate. 8-Week Program JAPN 3691: Technical & Scientific Japanese JAPN 3692: Business Japanese JAPN 3693: Japan Today 10-Week Program the above 3 courses plusJAPN 3813: Conversation Practicum • You usually have twoto three 95-min. classes,Monday through Friday except on field trip days.

  5. Program Contents - Very Fun • Weekend trip to Nagasaki, weekend home-stay, field trips to companies and factories, school visit, scavenger hunt in Beppu, etc. • You will have opportunities to do cultural activities such as tea ceremony and calligraphy, and have intercultural communication experience with host university students. • You will be staying in a dormitory on campus and have ample opportunitiesto talk to both Japanese and internationalstudents living in a dorm.

  6. Program Requirements • You must have completed at least JAPN2002 or equivalent with a grade of B or above with good attendance & homework submission record, and be in good academic standing by the end of Spring 2013. (If you are in JAPN 3001 or above, you need to maintain a B average in Japanese classes.) In addition, you need to be adaptableto Japanese culture. • You need to self-study as much content of JAPN 3001 as possible if you will have only completed JAPN 2002 by the end of Spring 2013. • Maximum number of participants: 20 (min. 10)

Cost • Application Fee : $200 (non-refundable) • Program Fee: $3,900 for the 8-week program $4,300 for the 10-week program(non-refundable after we make a payment to APU) The program fee includes accommodation, textbooks, health/repatriation insurance, and ground transportation for program-sponsored mandatory activities. It does not include air fares (international flights to/from Japan and domestic flights within the U.S. and Japan), ground transportation for non-program activities, summer tuition and fees, and most meals (est. $1,250-$1,480). • Summer Session Tuitions & Student Fees Since LBAT Japan is a GT summer study abroad program, you need to pay summer tuition and student fees in addition to the program fee and application fee. In-state students pay $275 per credit hour (i.e. $2,475 for 9 credit hours and $3,300for 12 credit hours) plus student fees. Out-of-state students pay additional $250.

  8. Scholarships • Various study-abroad scholarship programs are available. (See http://oie.gatech.edu/scholarships). Many scholarships have the application deadlines earlier than the LBAT Japan. If you want to apply for study-abroad scholarship, apply early. • Campoamor Scholarship (http://www.modlangs.gatech.edu/study-abroad/campoamor): Usually about $400, depending on the # of applicants (Applyat http://www.modlangs.gatech.edu/study-abroad/campoamor/application. Application Deadline: March 30, 2014) • LBAT Japan Scholarship (NEW in 2014) Amount: $250 (in the form of the program fee deduction in exchange of some work helping the program) Students will be notified by email of the LBAT Japan Scholarship application procedure once s/he is accepted into the program.

  9. Scholarships • Hope Scholarships applies. You can use HopeScholarship to pay for the summer tuition. If you are using a scholarship or loan to pay the LBAT Japan program fee (NOT the summer tuition) and the money is not going to be available before the payment deadline(s), you must submit a letter requesting a deferment of the payment to the program director (Kimiaki Yamaguchi). In this letter, you must specify a new payment date. You are also required to submit a copy of the scholarship award letter or loan approval letter.

  10. Where Is Beppu? • Beppu is located in the northeastern part of Kyushu Island. Beppu is a well-known resort city, famous for its numerous hot springs.

  11. Where Will We Be Staying? • You will be staying at a dorm called AP House on the campus of Ritsumeikan Asia Pacific University (APU). APU, which is located on the outskirts of Beppu, is our host university for the 2013 LBAT Japan program. (http://www.apu.ac.jp/home/index.php?sel_lang=japanese&lang=english)

  12. Required Orientations • If you are accepted into the program, you must complete mandatoryOIE orientations (Part I and Part II). (http://oie.gatech.edu/prepare)For the dates, time, and place of these meetings, check http://www.oie.gatech.edu/newsroom/events/ • In addition to these the OIE orientations, you are required to attend two orientation meetings for LBAT Japan. Your participation in these meetings is mandatory.
