GOVERNMENT OF NAGALAND DEPARTMENT OF AGRICULTURE PRESENTATION DURING NATIONAL CONFERENCE ON AGRICULTURE FOR RABI CAMPAIGN 2005-06
BASIC INFORMATION • TOTAL GEOGRAPHICAL AREA : 16,57,900 ha. • TOTAL CULTIVABLE AREA : 7,22,464 ha. • GROSS CROPPED AREA : 3,24,429 ha. • NET CROPPED AREA : 2,70,135 ha. • NET IRRIGATED AREA : 63,800 ha. • TOTAL FOOD GRAIN PRODUCTION: 4,05,500 MT • (2004-05)
Reasons for increase in food production • Improved package of practices • Increased use of HYV • Increased IPM practices particularly for cultivation of food grains • Practice of integrated nutrient management • Careful crop planning & cropping systems • Strengthening of extension services
METEOROLOGICAL DATA KHARIF 2005 Source : Soil & WC Deptt. Kohima
Rainfall • This year the rainfall is erratic • There are indications of drought in some areas • But indicate that Metrological system in Nagaland has gone “Online” • The observers are now bringing the data to the CICs which are fed into the NIC web site for • http://164.100.149.140/weather/login.asp
FUND RECEIVED FROM GOI & ITS UTILIZATION DURING 2005-06 Rs. in Lakhs ADDITIONAL FUND REQUIREMENT DURING 2005-06 Requirement for P3DM
Participatory 3 Dimensional Model Participatory 3-Dimensional Modeling (P3-DM) integrates participatory resource mapping, and spatial information (contour lines) to produce a stand-alone scaled relief model, which has proved to be a user-friendly and a relatively accurate research, planning and management tool
What are the advantages of P3-DM for villagers • Both process and output fuel self-esteem & confidence • Raise local awareness • Powerful medium for easing communication and language barriers • Creates common grounds for discussion. • Effective in portraying relatively extensive and remote areas, overcoming logistical and practical constraints to public participation in land/resource use planning and management. • 3-D modeling is an efficient community-organizing tool because it gathers people to share information and concerns. • Empowers people to plan effectively for themselves based on their needs.
What are the advantage of P3-DM for planners • Sketch maps, transect diagrams or other conventional spatial tools, produced at different times have inherent weakness - outputs are not properly geo-referenced and consistently coded. • P3-DM overcomes this weakness, because the relief model is a constant with its legend and coding embedded. • Relief modeling can give communities and local authorities a clear first time factual understanding of their perimeter. • P3-DM facilitates a bottom-up approach to planning. • The use of differentiated coding systems and materials, 3-D models, similarly GIS, accommodate overlapping information layers, thus facilitating community-based analysis and decision-making.
PROGRESS OF PROGRAMME IMPLEMENTATION • SEED PRODUCTION PROGRAMME B. BALANCED & INTEGRATED USE OF FERTILIZER C. INTEGRATED PEST MANAGEMENT (IPM)
STEPS TAKEN TO IMPROVE PRODUCTIVITY • EXTENSION SUPPORT • CROP DIVERSIFICATION & INTENSIFICATION • QUALITY SEEDS/PLANTING MATERIALS • IPM PRACTICES • INM PRACTICES • MECHANIZED FARMING SYSTEM
PROGRESS ON APMC AMENDMENT THE APMC ACT OF NAGALAND HAS BEEN PASSED IN MARCH 2005 BY STATE ASSEMBLY AND ALSO NOTIFICATION OF THE ACT IS ALREADY DONE RECENTLY
NATIONAL HORTICULTURE MISSION AND ATMA • ATMA : ON THE 9TH SEPT, 2005 STATE LEVEL ORIENTATION WORKSHOP ON EXTENSION REFORMS WAS CONDUCTED AT KOHIMA WITH THE RESOURCE PERSONS FROM THE MANAGE HYDERABAD. THE CONSTITUTIONS OF VARIOUS COMMITTEES ARE ALREADY IN PROGRESS • HORTICULTUE MISSION: UNDER MINI MISSION III 8 WHOLE SALE MARKETS HAVE BEEN GRANTED BY GOI. 4 MARKETS COMPLETED. 2 MARKETS WERE INAUGURATED BY HIS EXCELLENCY GOVERNOR OF NAGALAND, AND 2 ARE YET TO BE INAUGURATED. REMAINING 4 MARKETS ARE UNDER CONSTRUCTION. IT IS EXPECTED TO COMPLETE BY NOVEMBER 2005
STATUS OF QUARANTINE : DOES NOT EXIST IN THE STATE • SUGGESTION FOR RABI PRODUCTION: • TIMELY RELEASE OF FUND • TIMELY AVAILABILITY OF INPUTS • STRENGTHEN EXTENSION SUPPORT • IMPROVED WATER AND IRRIGATION MANAGEMENT • REFORM LAND TENURE SYSTEM • IMPROVE CREDIT FACILITIES • MANAGEMENT OF POST HARVEST TECHNOLOGY • IMPOWERING THE FARMERS
GINGER PROMISING COMMERCIAL CROP (CHEMICAL FREE)
