The Roman Republic • Senate • Most influential and powerful of the three governing bodies - Controlled public funds and decided foreign policy - In times of emergency (wars), the senators could propose a citizen be named dictator.
The Roman Republic • Magistrates included consuls, praetors, and censors. • Two individuals were elected to one-year terms to serve as consuls chief executives. - Consul ran the government, commanded the army, and could appoint dictators. • Each consul could veto or refuse to approve the acts of other consuls - This division of power was the principle of checks and balances.
The Roman Republic • Magistrates • Romans elected praetors to help the consuls. - During war praetors commanded armies. -During peace they oversaw the Roman legal system . • Censors registered citizens according to their wealth. - Appointed candidates to the Senate - Oversaw the moral conduct of all citizens.
The Roman Republic • The Conflict of the Orders • Romans were divided into two classes of people: patricians and plebians. • Patricians- were powerful landowners who controlled the government. Inherited their powers. • Plebeians-who made up most of the population, were mainly farmers and workers. - For years plebeians had few rights, could vote but barred from office.
The Roman Republic • The Republic Grows - The years of the Roman Republic were not a time of peace. -More than 200 years of war. • Role of Roman army - Every adult male citizen who owned land was required by law to serve. - Army generals who enforce discipline. - Every major unit was a legion, consisting of 4,500 to 6,000 citizens called legionnaires.
