What is NATMS? • The National Drug Treatment Monitoring System (NDTMS) • April 2001 • Tier 3 and 4 (structured) treatment • The National Alcohol Treatment Monitoring System (NATMS) • April 2008 • Subset of NDTMS • 28 data items – reports on primary alcohol clients • DH commissioned • NTA managed • Enables national, regional and local level reporting on alcohol treatment
Accessing the data • NDTMS.net publicly available datahttp://www.ndtms.net/ • NDTMS.net restricted statistics – Quarterly Reporting • NATMS Annual Statistical Reports (08/09 available, 09/10 to be released) http://www.nta.nhs.uk/uploads/natms_annual_statistics_report_2008_2009.pdf • Needs Assessment Data (09/10 to be released)
Quarterly (Purple) Reports • NDTMS.net - http://www.ndtms.net/ login to access restricted statistics. Also posted onto DAMS. • 3 reports: • Alcohol PCT • Alcohol Agency (all activity) • Alcohol Agency (PCT of residence) • Alcohol treatment information: In treatment YTD, new presentations, non primary alcohol clients receiving alcohol interventions, exits, waiting times, exit status, referral source, recorded alcohol type. • Alcohol user profile: gender, age group, ethnicity, presenting substances (second and third drugs) • Guidance documents also on NDTMS.net
Questions • Knowledge/understanding of the reports and access • Current use of the reports • Suitability of the associated guidance • Improvements to the current reports
Alcohol Needs Assessment 2009/10 • Currently under development – November release • First year of implementation – will be updated annually • Reports on 2009/10 ‘frozen’ data • Distributed through DAMS and via Regional Alcohol Managers • Provides the number and case mix of clients at each stage of the treatment journey (Entry, In Treatment, and Exit). • Reports on one full years worth of data and provides more detail than the quarterly performance reports • Intended to inform the JSNA process
Alcohol Needs Assessment 2009/10 • 2 components • Treatment Map Summary • Detailed Client/Agency Profiles • Key differences from drug treatment data: • Select client type (Primary alcohol, or adjunctive alcohol) • Reports on Tier 2 activity (separate data item)
Future Steps • Release of the needs assessment data (Nov) • The production of an outcomes measure for alcohol treatment • Filling data ‘black-holes’: • Tier 2 Brief Interventions – now reported on in NA • ‘Other structured treatment’ – why so many falling into this category? • The production of a summary sheet for purple reports (if this is felt to be of use)
Summary • Currently 3 quarterly reports produced • New comprehensive needs assessment data to be released soon • 09/10 annual statistical report to updated soon • Looking to improve current purple reports • Any further questions?
