Definition of autism • Is a disorder of neutral development characterized by impaired social interaction and communication. • Affects information processing in the brain by altering how nerve cells connect and organize. • Has a strong genetic basis and the genetics of autism are complex.
Different types of autism There are many different types of known autism, the main three are: • Autistic Disorder: • It is the most serious of all types. • Also known as true autism, this disorder results behaviors, interests, and activities. • Pervasive Developmental Disorder: • It is typical autism, this is less serious than true autism. • People with this type of autism think literally and not understand humor • Asperger's Disorder: • It is the least serious of all types. • Children with this disorder show little, if any, general language delay.
What causes autism? • The brain shows abnormalities in the frontal lobes and brain stem. • The higher incidence of autism in families points to a genetic aspect. • Toxins enter the bloodstream and reach the brain to cause havoc in many sensory and cognitive functions.
Signs of autism • Parents usually notice signs in the first two years of their child's life. • The signs of autism are: • Communicating verbally and non-verbally. • Relating to others and the world around them. • Thinking and behaving flexibility.
is there a cure?! • Although there is no known cure, there have been reported cases of children who recovered autism. • Not many children with autism live independently after reaching adulthood, though some become successful.
