  1. Ch 1.5 Transatlantic Encounters MAIN IDEA As Europeans searched for sea routes to Asia, Christopher Columbus reached the Americas.

  2. WHY IT MATTERS NOW • Columbus’s journey permanently linked the Americas to the rest of the world.

  3. Christopher Columbus • In 1492, he attempts to reach Asia by sailing west. • Meets Taino- natives of the Caribbean; renames their island San Salvador.

  4. Gold, Land, and Religion • Columbus searches for gold, claims lands for Spain, plants crosses. • Four voyages, brings soldiers, priests, and colonists. • Explores small islands and coastlines of Cuba and Hispaniola, then the mainland.

  5. Colonization • Establishing and controlling distant settlements • Europeans force locals to work, dominate with sophisticated weapons.

  6. Resistance and Conquest • Spanish put down rebellions on different islands.

  7. Disease Ravages the Native Americans • Natives have no natural immunity. • Contagious diseases kills hundreds of thousands, maybe millions.

  8. Slave Labor and Plantations • Large farms with single crop. • Since natives are dying, Africans brought to work in colonies. • Demands for workers grows, as for the prices of slaves. • Slave trade becomes profitable; more Europeans join slave trade. • Millions of taken from Africa.

  11. National Rivalries • 1494, Treaty of Tordesillas divides Western Hemisphere: -Spanish gets west of the line -Portugal gets east, including Brazil. • Treaty unenforceable; English, Dutch, French colonize Americas.
