difficult phrases • a jacket and tie: means “西装加领带”in Chinese. No article is used before tie, which shares the same article a with jacket, thus forming a whole pair of closely related things e.g. a lock and key锁带钥匙 The lady came to the village in a horse and cart.(车马) next
(Para. 3) Of course a transitional phrase, used here to denote a concession, meaning “当然了,然而” e.g. The wedding dress is very beautiful. Of course, the price is also quite high. • (Para. 3) Even though introduces a concessive clause e.g. Even though they enjoy the beautiful scenery in the port city, they still miss their hometown in the mountains. back
difficult sentences • (Para. 2) My hair is dark brown but there is not too much left on the top of my head. 我的头发是暗褐色的,但头顶上剩下的头发已经不多了。 not too much; here refers to the hair left on the top of my head: past participle phrase used to modify the pronoun much e.g. I have so much work to do in the lab. But there is little time left before the end of the year. back
