  1. Research Things you need to know related to CALL

  2. Type of Research Design • Quantitative Research • Qualitative

  3. Quantitative Research • Features of social reality have a constancy across time and settings, and thus can be isolated and conceptualized as a variable. • Use mathematics to represent and analyze reality. • Use statistical procedures to analyze the collected numerical data (deductive). • E.g. experimental research, survey, comparative research, correlation research

  4. Qualitative Research • Features of social reality are constructed by the individuals who participate in it • Focus on the study of cases and make thick verbal description of observation • Analyze data using a verbal, visual, and inductive approach (inductive approach) • E.g. case study, ethnography, life-story

  5. CALL Survey Research Pitfalls • Ambiguity and lack of detail • Novelty effects/Learner training • Survey question construction • Limited, pre-determine questions • Clear understanding of the question • Problem of likert scale questions • Students’ eagerness to please the teacher

  6. CALL Comparative Research Pitfalls • Broad-based research that assumes CALL or “traditional” teaching constitute a distinct method, not a composite of techniques and approaches. • Ignore individual differences • Lack of clear understanding/description of a “traditional” classroom, the “online” classroom, CALL program, etc. • Teacher’s role in CALL

  7. Theory, Research, & Pedagogy • What are their roles and relationships in CALL? (DISCUSSION )

  8. Activity • A graduate TESOL program wants to pursue distance learning opportunities. What kind of research they need to do to determine the feasibility of creating an online program? • An ESL instructor is using podcasting first time in her class to facilitate students’ learning. What kind of research she should do to find out students’ attitudes toward podcasting use and whether the use of podcast does have an impact on learning?
