  2. Algonquin • Algonquin tribes lived in small, one-family homes called wigwams • They could be a dome, cone, or rectangular shape

  3. Iroquois • The Iroquois lived in a longhouse that included up to 12 families inside. • The longhouse was 50 to 100 feet long. • It included several rooms separated by animal skins.

  4. Iroquois • The Iroquois villages had their own form of protection. • The longhouses were surrounded by a wooden fence called a palisade

  5. Bartering • The Native Americans had no money. They would trade instead • They often used wampum, strings of shell beads for trading. • European settler wanted furs, and would give the tribes their superior weapons
