  6. Instrument Payload 3 Gliders • CTD (SBE GPCTD) • Chlorophyll, CDOM, Optical Backscatter (WETLabs ECO Puck Triplet) • Dissolved Oxygen (AADI 4831)

  7. Sampling Schemes & Rationale • Pivotal: Bare minimum sampling scheme that will not be violated. Goal is to guarantee a minimum amount of data that satisfy the relevant OOI science themes. • Default: Sampling scheme running unless requested otherwise; typically more frequent than pivotal sampling. Goal is to make use of excess capacity beyond pivotal where available. • Adaptive: User-requested, custom sampling scheme. Not to violate pivotal sampling.

  8. Sampling Scheme: Flanking Moorings • Pivotal: Preserve tides • 6 hours for all • Default: Whatever gets us through a year • CTD, DO, Fluorescence/Backscatter: 15 min. • ADCP: 1 hour • pH: 2 hours

  9. Sampling Scheme: Profiler Mooring • Pivotal: Preserve eddy events • One profile every 72 hours • Default: Whatever gets us through a year • Surface-piercing profiler: 2 profiles per day • Wire-following Profiler: 1 profile per day (one-way)

  10. Sampling Scheme: Surface Mooring • Bulk meteorology: always on (1 min interval) • Pivotal: Preserve tides • 6 hours • Default: Whatever gets us through a year • 15 min to 1 hour, depending on instrument

  11. Sampling Scheme: Gliders • (Caveat: final word to come…) • Pivotal: Preserve eddy events • One profile every 72 hours • Default: Whatever gets us through a year • Instruments on every second downcast(2 per day) • Default flight pattern: Around the mooring triangle

  12. Note on Sampling Scheme Instruments store data at original resolution in internal (or nearby) memory, available after recovery Telemetered data for real-time applications are sub-sampled, esp. from subsurface moorings via acoustic path through gliders

  13. Sampling Scheme Station Papa

  14. Water Samples Calibration / validation of deployed instruments Some instruments attached to CTD rosette for dedicated cal/val casts, some validated by separate nearby cast Water samples to ground-truth CTD and attached/nearby OOI assets

  15. Water Samples Salinity (CTD on moorings and gliders) Nutrients (profiler mooring) Dissolved oxygen (moorings and gliders) Chlorophyll via acetone extraction (fluorometers on moorings and gliders) Total dissolved inorganic carbon and alkalinity (pH and pCO2 on moorings)

  16. Cal/Val at Papa Deployment 2013 25% of moored CTD slightly out of spec 2 out of 3 pH dysfunctional in environmental conditions (worked in lab) Fluorometers are factory-calibrated against one phytoplankton species, need to adjust to local phytoplankton community Oxygen optodes anecdotally reported as reading a few % low, i.e. known to need small correction

  17. More Cal/Val Notes Intent to validate meteorological data against shipborne systems Intent to validate currents against shipborne ADCP Presently no cal/val other than factory calibration to CDOM and optical backscatter

  18. The End – Any Questions About: …instrumentation? …sampling schemes? …calibration and validation?
