CLEFT SENTENCES WITH “WHAT” • Cleft sentences are used to help people to focus attention on a particular piece of information. A speaker may use a cleft sentence to add emphasis. He didn’t come to class late, what he did is that he came at the end of the class. He didn’t just buy a car, what he bought was a Mercedes. Everyone always notices her smile. what everyone notices is always her smile.

What is attractive to me in a person is his or her eye color. • Use the cleft sentence with other verbs by inserting “what” at the beginning of the sentence and a form of the verb “to be after the main verb. What motivates him the most is the income.
