Integumentary System • Your skin is an unique organ like no other and on it holds the blueprint of who you are.
Integumentary System • Skin • Hair • Nails • Sweat Glands • Oil Glands • If your skin were spread out flat it would cover an area about three feet by seven feet.
The skin is made up of … Two distinct layers of tissues: 1. The outer called the epidermis 2. The inner called the dermis
The Skin organ’s function • Protection: water and germs • Regulation of body temperature: The skin protects your internal organs and body temperature from extreme cold and heat. • Sensitivity: Pressure, touch, heat, cold and pain.
Problems with the skin • Warts • Calluses and corns • Cold sores or fever blisters • Ulcers • Skin Cancer
Immune System • The Lymphatic System and Immune System work together to fight off intruders. • The body is equipped with a variety of defense mechanisms that help protect you from unfriendly invaders.
Lines of Defense • The skin is the first line of defense when a germ invades the body.
Two Main Types of Defense • Natural Immunity: The body has an inborn resistance to certain diseases. The skin and mucus membranes are an example of physical barriers that guard the body. Enzymes such as the gastic juices in your stomach help resist infection.
Acquired Immunity: The body adapts to respond to certain invaders and then remembers who the intruders were so that next time they are ready to attack the invader. Immunity is the body’s resistance to specific foreign intruders.
Lymphocytes play an important role in recognizing certain invaders • B-Cells • T-cells Immunizations are also used to give the human body an acquired immunity to a specific disease.
But I keep getting sick ! • Repeat bouts with colds or flu viruses, continual fatigue, increased allergic reactions, incomplete recovery from a sickness and poor response to treatment are some of the symptoms you may experience when your immune system is not functioning effectively.
As you grow older you will notice changes in your body, some positive and some negative. As you get to know what is “normal” for your body you will become more aware when there is an unusual change.
Problems • Immunodeficiency disorders: result in the body’s failure to fight infection and tumors. • The immune system is weakened or malfunctioning for some reason. This is often caused by an inherited or congenital defect that interferes with the normal development of the immune system.
A disease can also damage the immune system to the point that it cannot function effectively. • When the defense system is weakened certain infections (opportunistic infections) can take advantage of the situation and cause more serious complications. Opportunistic infections are caused my microorganisms that don’t normally cause infection when the immune system is healthy.
Allergies • Allergic reactions are related to the immune system. A person who suffers from an allergy has become hypersensitive to an allergen (the object that causes the abnormal response). • Common antigens that may produce allergic reactions are: Plant pollens, house dust, animal hair and certain foods.
HIV virus that causes AIDS • AIDS (Acquired Immunodeficiency Syndrome) • It causes illness by weakening the body’s ability to fight off infections and to resist tumor growth. A simple cold could cause a life-threatening case of pneumonia.
Immunodeficiency • Autoimmune disease differ from immunodeficiency disorders. Your immune system is designed to attack foreign intruders. • When your body’s immune system mistakes its own cells and tissues for possible antigens, the condition is called autoimmune disease. (rheumatic fever, rheumatoid arthritis and lupus erythematosis)
Nervous System • The Central Nervous System is to maintain the homeostasis (a stable environment). • It controls and coordinates all the body parts so that they work as one flowing unit and respond to changes appropriately.
Organs of the Nervous System • Brain • Spinal Cord • Peripheral Nerves – connect the central nervous system to the other body parts. • Somatic nervous system -Your ability to sense and respond to things from the outside environment such as sight, smell, taste and hearing.
Masses of neurons (nerve cells) in the brain and spinal cord are specialized to react to physical and chemical changes in the body. • When you experience a strong emotion such as fear, adrenaline is released that may cause you to run. If you were to touch something hot, your sensory nerves would tell your brain “pain” and then your brain would cause you to pull away.
Impulses can travel through your nervous system at a rate of 350 feet per second!
Problems • Pinched nerve • Infections: Polio, rabies • Epilepsy: a brain disorder that results from a sudden burst of nerve action. • Tumors • Cerebral Palsy: the cerebrum of the brain is damages. May cause muscular spasms, poor balance, problems with vision, hearing and talking. • Multiple Sclerosis (MS): the outside coating that protects some nerves is destroyed. Loss of control over certain body movements, speaking and hearing.
Endocrine System • The glands of the endocrine system secrete hormones to send messages to the cells in the body through the blood. • Chemicals secreted by the glands of the endocrine system are called hormones or chemical messengers. • Hormones help regulate the body such as energy control, sugar and insulin balance, as well as water and salt balance.
Other hormones produce changes over a long period of time; for example, a child’s growth and sexual maturity. • Hormones control rhythmic changes such as the menstruation cycle in a female.
Hormones send a chemical messages to an organ to either speed up or slow down. • Hormones have the ability to cause dramatic responses in your body and also effect your emotions such as fear, anger, joy and sadness.
Problems • The Pituitary Gland: is responsible for releasing your growth hormone. If too much or too little is released your size will be negatively affected. • The Thyroid gland: too little hormones are produced – Hypothyroidism occurs. If too much – Hyperthyroidism. A blood test is used to determine issues.
The Reproductive System • Is the system responsible for the continuation of the human race. • God made man and woman in His image, each unique and special. • The Reproductive System, like all the other systems of the body function the way God designed it to function.
It is common to feel uneasy when discussing the organs and functions of the Reproductive System. God has given all of mankind an inborn, godly modesty. • This feeling of uneasiness causes people to respect other’s privacy. Beyond the pure scientific information remember that God designed man and woman to be involved in the miracle of life.
The male sperm cell is one of the smallest of all human cells, yet it carries the father’s full legacy to the child. • The female egg is much larger in comparison to the sperm, and it carries the mother’s full legacy to the child. • Millions of sperm are released at one time, and while they all try to swim vigorously toward one egg, only one sperm will successfully penetrate and fertilize the egg. • When the sperm has penetrated the egg, the egg hardens and dos not allow any other sperm to enter.
Male Reproductive Problems • Testicular Cancer: This can be a common cancer in men. Seeing your doctor regularly can help to catch this cancer in its early stages. • Inguinal Hernia: A hole opens in the abdomen wall and a piece of the intestine pushes through into the scrotum. Lifting heavy objects can cause a hernia.
Female Reproductive Problems • Premenstrual Syndrome (PMS): Some systems include headache, moodiness, cramps, tension and depression. • Vaginitis: An infection in the vagina. It can cause pain and irritation. See your doctor. • Cancer of the female organs: Be aware of any unusual changes in your reproductive system or menstrual cycle. See your Doctor regularly.
