E N D
2. Gender? • 2 Male • 18 Females I asked both males and females in my questionnaire in order to get a variety of opinions as both genders will have different views.
3. How old are you? • 2 age 22+ • 3 aged 17-21 • 15 aged 14-16 I asked young and old people in order to get opinions from different generations and to see how their opinions differ.
4. What type/genre of music do you like to listen to? • Rock/Metal 4 • Soft Rock 1 • Indie 6 • Pop 6 • Dance 1 • Pop Punk 2 • Alternative 2 • R and B 1 • Rap 1 The first question I asked in regards to music is ‘What type/genre of music do you listen to?’ This gave me results which show what music genre is most popular and so I should base my magazine on this genre. This would be beneficial as I would have a larger target audience meaning an increase in sales. It also gave me an idea of what music they like to listen to and how this may affect their answers.
5. Who is your favourite band/singer within that genre? • Eminem 1 • Hozier 2 • Demi Lovato 1 • Kings of Leon 1 • Beyonce 2 • James Bay 1 • One Direction 1 • Ariana Grande 1 • Imagine Dragons 3 • My Chemical Romance 2 • All Time Low 1 • Kygo 1 • The 1975 2 • Stereophonics 1 • Guns N Roses 1 By posing the question ‘Who is your favourite band/singer within that genre?’ I am able to determine what extra feature(s)/Articles I could include in my magazine. Moreover, I can see which bands-singers are most popular in general and so I should base one of my main articles/front cover on them in order to increase sales.
6. What other bands/singers have you heard of within the rock pop genre? My chosen genre was pop rock and so by specifying this genre in the question ‘What other bands/singers have you heard of within the rock pop genre?’ I have gained valuable information about what artists are most popular in this genre. Therefore, I should base my main articles on these artists in order to attract a wider audience. The most popular pop rock artist was Fall Out Boy. I will include this band within my magazine and also the other most popular bands which include Royal Blood, Imagine Dragons , George Ezra, James Bay and Hozier • Paramore 1 • Kings of Leon 1 • Arctic Monkeys 1 • Linkin Park 1 • Florence and the Machine 1 • Fall Out Boy 5 • Royal Blood 2 • The Beatles 1 • Tonight Alive 1 • Panic! At the Disco 1 • Pvris 1 • Bring me the Horizon 1 • Imagine Dragons 2 • My Chemical Romance 1 • George Ezra 2 • James Bay 2 • Hozier 2 • Fleetwood Mac 1 • Lana Del Ray 1 • 5 SOS 1 • Maroon 5 1 • Muse 1
7. What 2 words would you associate with the rock pop genre? E.g. Loud • Loud 5 • Energy 3 • Different 1 • Dark 1 • Crazy 1 • Simple 1 • Cool 3 • Emo 4 • High 1 • Chill 1 • Intense 1 • Shouty 1 • Metal 1 • Intense 2 • Noisy 1 • Music 1 • Lights 1 • Melodic 1 • Guitar 1 • Bouncy 1 • Heavy 1 • Orchestral 1 • Melodic 1 • Tuneful 1 By asking ‘What 2 words do you associate with the rock pop genre?’ I have collected a list of words which could be used for my Masthead or even main coverline/Coverlines. In using these words, when a person looks at the magazine and see’s them, they will be able to tell what type/genre of magazine it will be. Hopefully, people will be more inclined to pick up the magazine and buy it if they see it fits with their taste in music just from glancing at the text. From my research, ‘Loud’ is the most popular word as well as ‘Emo’ and ‘Energy’ also being popular. It would be advantageous for me to use the word ‘Loud’ in my masthead as it signifies the genre of the magazine.
8. What 3 colours would you associate with the rock pop genre? E.g. Red • Black 13 • Red 16 • Purple 3 • White 6 • Pink 3 • Blue 7 • Green 3 • Yellow 5 • Grey 1 • Brown 2 By conducting this questionnaire, I have discovered that the colours most associated with the pop rock genre are Black, Red and Blue. These colours should be used as my colour scheme for the front cover, contents and double page spread. Not only do these colours represent the genre of music the magazine is based upon, but are also eye catching and so will catch a readers eye.
9. Are these colours bright or dark? E.g. bright red or dark red Finding out whether bright or dark colours were better, I can use my findings and apply them to my colour scheme. Dark colours were the most popular as the darkness represents the genre of my magazine which is rock pop. For example, if I use the colour red, the red connotes the pop genre where as the darkness of the red would represent the rock genre. • Bright 6 • Dark 13 • In the Middle 1
Text 2 Images 18 10. Do you prefer more text or images within a magazine? Knowing that people prefer images over text means that I can apply this to my magazine. On my contents page and double page spread, I will use big/more images in comparison to text.
11. Would you prefer to read an interview of a band or an interview of one member? • Band 16 • One Member 4 I have found that, from my questionnaire, people want interviews with the whole band compared to one member. I can apply this knowledge to my magazine so that when I interview a band for my double page spread, I will make sure the focus is not placed upon one member. This will mean that people will be more inclined to read my magazine if they see the interview is with the whole band.
12. Do posters within magazines appeal to you? The question ‘do posters within magazine appeal to you?’ has given me extra ideas for what to include on my front cover. To use this information, on my front cover, I will mention by graphic features and buzzwords, that my magazine includes free posters. This will hopefully increase my sales of the magazine. • Yes 18 • No 2
13. How often do you buy a music magazine? • Never 12 • Weekly 2 • Monthly 0 • Yearly 2 • Other 4- Sometimes, depends what is in it,every few months The frequency of publication for my magazine can be determined from my questionnaire results. These results show that it would be best to make my magazine a monthly one. Most of my results show that people don’t really buy magazines anymore and so firstly I know that I should not publish it weekly. Therefore it would be best to publish the magazine every month. This is the best option as people have said they buy the magazine on occasion and sometimes yearly. This means my magazine has to be available every month but not every week.
14. How much are you willing to pay for a music magazine? • Less than £1- 0 • £1- 2 • £2- 6 • £3- 9 • No more than £3- 3 The price of my magazine would be best at a low price but I could charge up to £3 as people are willing to pay that price. However, if I do increase the price, what the magazine includes has to be worth the extra money. This may be the amount of pages or freebie’s.
15. What do you like about the magazine you buy? Colour, layout etc. • Colour 6 • Layout 2 • Pictures 8 • Contents 3 • Posters 1 • Interviews 2 • Favourite Celebrities 3 • Reviews 1 By finding out what people like in a magazine, I can use this knowledge to my advantage and apply it to my magazine. I have discovered that people like the pictures, colours, contents and if their favourite celebrities are featured. I can make sure that my colour scheme is simple and suitable to my magazine. Moreover, I know that I should include more pictures. It is more difficult to make sure my magazine contents and favourite celebrities are included but I can use my results from my previous questions such as ‘5.Who is your favourite band/singer within that genre?’ to fulfil this requirement.
16. What do you not like about the magazine you buy? Colour, layout etc. • Too much text 5 • Dull colours 2 • Layout 3 • Irrelevant articles 2 • Dramatic Headlines 1 • Unpopular celebrities used 1 • Adverts 3 • One genre 1 • Lies 2 My final question in my questionnaire was ‘what do you not like about the magazine you buy?’. This gave me important information as it allowed me to know what not to include in my magazine. I know not to include too much text as well as leaving out adverts and make sure the layout of my magazine is simple and tidy.
