Questionnaire Results May Simpson
Introduction For the main task of this project I am creating a Music Video. I created a questionnaire which I then put on Survey Monkey, for people to answer so that I could get a better and broader idea and understanding of what other people would like to see in a rock music video. I asked a variety of questions, both quantitative and qualitative, so I could get a deeper understanding of what people want and sometimes even why. This will help me to develop my ideas further so that I can create try to create a more professional Music Video. This will also help me to gain a better understanding of modern distribution, cost and features that I could have in my music video.
Methods and Techniques For the questionnaire I decided to ask questions that were able to help me find out about the sort of people that would be listening to the music video and their lives and backgrounds. I wasn’t able to choose the people that I gave my questionnaire to as I put it online, but because it was anonymous this way, people would have felt less pressure to give the ‘right’ answer to the questions so I feel like I now have more reliable answers. 20 people answered my questionnaire and 13 of these were in my target audience. although the others were not, I still think that their opinions will help for this unit because it will help me with the smaller tasks and although the target audience are usually the people that watch the music videos the most, there are sometimes people out of the target audience that would enjoy it, so their opinions will still help.
Audience Profiles The first two questions that I asked were what age and what gender the person doing the questionnaire was. I chose to ask these questions so that I could see if I got the target audience for my Music Video right. The graph on the right shows that it was almost equal between the genders, however there were slightly more males that answered the questionnaire. This means that I would like to create a unisex video for a wider audience range. The age of the target audience was easier to determine because out of the 20 people that answered 12 of them were 16-20.
Employment Status & Town I asked the employment of the people that took my questionnaire to figure out what they would be able to afford if they would like to buy the music, as there is no point in making the music way too expensive for the target audience because no one would buy it. I found from my results that the majority of the people that took the questionnaire were part-time employed as well as being students. This means that they will have a disposable income as they are not too focused on paying bills or needing money for rent. I also asked the home town of the people that took the questionnaire because I think that it will help me to make it more relatable to the target audience as I could use stereotypes of people that live there and places that look similar to the home town of the target audience. Most of the towns that were mentioned were in Essex, which has a big stereotype created for it, however that might not go well with the theme of a rock music video.
Rock Genres I chose to look deeper into rock music at the sub-genres, to find out more precisely what my target audience would like to listen to. I originally thought that more people would like to listen to heavy rock, even though that wasn’t what I was doing so I was surprised that the most popular choices were Acoustic and Britpop.
Favourite Artists I looked into people’s favourite artists so that I could try and create something similar to what people already like and get inspiration from the target audiences favourite bands. The music videos that they have already created will help me to relate to the audience. The most popular band was Coldplay, with 11 people voting for them as one of their favourites. Other popular bands were Snow Patrol, The Script, Oasis and The Fray. The least popular band were The blackout, which makes sense when you link back to the favourite genre, because they are quite a heavy band.
Purchasing Music & Music Videos 2 of my questions from the questionnaire were related to buying music and music videos. The first question I asked was how much people spend on music in a month. I asked this because I would need to know how much to sell my music album or video for, and base it on what people are really spending. Due to reasons such as easy radio access and illegal downloads, the majority of people said that in a month they don’t spend any money on music of any kind, including CD’s and downloads, however some people did spend more money on music downloads. From these results I know that I have to price my album or music videos reasonably and in the target audiences price range because if not then people will not buy it.
Music Video Access As the main part of the task is to create a music video, I looked into how people usually see music videos and whether they download them or not. The majority of the people that answered my questionnaire said that they watch music videos either on YouTube via their computers or on Music Channels such as MTV and when asked if they download music videos the majority of the answers were no. This means that when distributing my music video, it would be best to put it on YouTube and if I was working for a professional business then my music video would also do well on TV. I would also still put my music video on I-tunes for download, even though hardly any people download them because that is another way for people to see them who may prefer to watch them that way and keep them.
Music Video Props I then asked which elements people would like to see in the rock music video, so that I can use the most popular when creating it. This will then connect to the audience better because it will be what they like and they will be more likely to watch it and enjoy it. this will also help to increase downloads and sales of the music video and the album. I made it possible for the people doing the questionnaire to select more than one option, so I can add as many elements, features and props as possible to create the best music video that I possibly can that also relates to the target audience. The most popular things that people would want to see in the music video are the band and guitars, which are two very simple things that I can add to the music video. No one liked the idea of text, but that may have also been a very vague option and they may not have known exactly what it would look like. Other popular answers were drums and tattoos. I also gave the option to the people doing the questionnaire of adding their own ideas, which I may not have thought of. Answers from this were things such as crowds, dark colours, flashing lights and energy from the band. These ideas give more detail and a better insight into what the target audience want and therefore more in-depth detail to create a better music video that the target audience will enjoy.
Music Video Setting As the setting of the video I asked the audience where they thought the best setting for the video would be with a variety of options. The most popular answer was at a concert, which also includes a lot of the elements from the prop section of the questionnaire. Other favourites were at a skate park and in a studio, which will are good options to have because I will be able to get better access to these and they will be easier to film as I can concerntrate more on the story line of the music videos and get retake shots until I get the ones that I want, whereas at a concert the show is constantly going so there is not an opportunity to retake shots or ask the band to do it over again.
Music Video Effects & Features An important part of the music video is the editing and the effects that are used in it. I asked the audience what type of effects they would like to see in the music video so that I can use the most popular so that it relates to the audience and they enjoy the music video. The most popular answers were black and white and special effects, however it may be possible to use all of the different special effects together as there was not one that people didn’t like. Using all the different effects together would make the music video more complex and people would also find it more interesting.
Music Magazines I also asked what type of music magazine, if any, that the people who answered my questionnaire read. Out of 20 people, 14 did not read music magazines and the other 6 read magazines such as Kerrang. This question is relevant to the project because for the smaller tasks I have to create a magazine advert for the music album or DVD. Asking about the magazine will help me look for inspiration so that I can connect to my target audience. I can also look at themes, colours, texts and imagery that has been used in other magazine to help me make my own magazine advertisement.
Magazine Advertisements Because of the smaller task of creating an advertisement in a magazine, I chose 6 different pictures and asked which two of them people liked the best and why. The most popular magazine advertisement was number 6, because of the colours and the layers used. The most popular reason why was because it was simple, yet caught their attention and was also easy to read. The lighting of the picture is also appealing, and people like the way that it looks in general, because it is calm to the eye and not too overpowering. 1 2 3 4 5 6
Album Covers Similarly to the last question about Magazine Advertisements, I also asked which album covers were people’s favourite out of 6 and asked them to choose 2. As you can see my the graph, the most favourite album cover was number one. This is because of it’s simplicity, and the tones of the picture are eye catching and appealing. It makes people look at it and it also looks professional, which makes the band also seem professional, which makes people think that they are going to be very good. They are also a well known band, which may be why most people also thought this was the best album cover. 1 2 3 4 5 6
Conclusion From the results created by doing the questionnaire I found a variety of useful information which will help me when I start to create my own music video. I found both qualitative data, in which the opinions of the people who completed the questionnaire gave me a better insight into what people want to see and I also have strong quantitative data which shows me clearly what people want to see, their background and other useful information which will help me with not only the main task but the two smaller tasks as well. From collecting this data I am also now more aware of my target audience and who I am trying to aim my music video at, so I can think more carefully and clearly about how to reach my audience and create something that will appeal to them in many different ways. Each of the questions will help me in different ways, and I am pleased with all of my results because now I know what I should and shouldn’t do in my own music video. I am also pleased with the results and comments that I got for the picture questions, as they were very different to what I would have predicted, so it made me realise that although I may like something, it may not be what the target audience is going to like. The comments also helped because I now know what elements I can use in my own smaller projects that will appeal to more people.
Proposal From looking at these different results I have decided that I am going to look at the music videos of Coldplay as well as other favourite artists such as Snow Patrol, The Fray and The Script. As these were the favourite bands this will help me to research further into what my target audience wants to see. Looking at their music videos will also help me to see which different ways I can use the effects that people wanted to see in my music video and develop my own ideas by researching other videos more. I am also going to make my album available for download and also make sure that it is not too expensive so that people actually buy it, otherwise it will be illegally downloaded and I wouldn’t make any money. It has also helped me to decide how I want my magazine advertisement and my album cover to look, and I will continue to look at other bands adverts and covers so that I can develop these ideas to create an even better album cover so that it is appealing and people will like the way that it looks. From the questionnaire I have realised that these need to be simple to be effective and also look professional, so I will try to do that for mine. I feel as though the questionnaire has really helped me to develop my ideas and find out what my target audience wants so that I can create it to appeal to them.
