Set Expectations • Define goals • Discuss what mentees are hoping to gain from the experience, and what mentors feel they can best provide/share with mentee • Both participants establish goals to achieve by end of 6 months • Establish: • Best time/place to meet once per month (required) • How to communicate outside of meetings (optional) • Discuss privacy/confidentiality
Suggestions for Mentees • Clearly communicate goals • Career transition? Introductions and networking? Career advice? Life advice? • Stay open-minded to suggestions • Take action, stay present and engaged • Consider ways to reciprocate mentor • Aim to make this a mutually beneficial relationship • Be transparent about what is not working
Suggestions for Mentors • Gain clear understanding of mentee goals • Target advice specifically to meet goals • Welcome communication through monthly meetings/defined routes • Use all resources at disposal • Facilitate introductions, suggest literature, websites beyond scope of knowledge • Consider ways to add value once goals begin materializing
