AREA COVERED • The Team provides services to visually and hearing impaired people who live in the Armagh and Dungannon District Council area.

DEAFNESS • Deafness is a generic term which covers a wide range of hearing loss • Deaf with a capital D denotes people who regard themselves as part of a linguistic cultural minority group. (Deaf people). • deafness with a lower case d is used when describing hearing loss in general. • Hard of Hearing denotes people with an acquired hearing loss.

THEORY • ‘Maslow’s Heirarchy of Needs.’ However, contrary to Maslow’s theory, the Deaf community formed as a result of an oppressive society, having achieved a strong sense of ‘belonging’ despite the fact that lower level needs may not have been met.
