End of Course Exams A Review of Spring 2014 Guide Elementary Principals Please share with Fine Arts and PE teachers
Guide Developed on Best Information • The guide is designed to cover the following areas: • Courses and Content • Participants • Students with Disabilities • ELL Students • Students with 504 • All others • Opt Out • Administration times and schedules • Accommodations • Test Materials • Scoring • Passing Scores • Using the EoC as a Grade
EoCs Available from PED EoCs Administered in APS • PED has developed EoCs that are listed on their site as designed for grades 4-5: • Art • Music • PE • We are testing only the 5th grade Art and Music course • And 4th grade PE course
PE End of Course Exam – 4th Grade Only • 15 multiple choice items on the exam • 3 performance tasks on which the teacher rates each student • Rubric is 0-3 points for each task • Teachers will administer the multiple choice items and students will use the answer document to respond • Then each student will have three additional items on the document • The teacher will rate the student on each task and complete the answer document with the rubric rating. • Do not scan the answer documents until the performance tasks are completed on the last three items.
Art End of Course Exam – 5th Grade Only • 10 multiple choice items • Items 11 and 14 are a no point value item • Items 12-13 and 15-16 are performance tasks; Students are asked to sketch according to directions • No Rubric is available (as of 4/2/14) • Teachers will administer the multiple choice items and students will use the answer document to respond • Then each student will have 4 additional items on the document • The teacher will rate the student on each task and complete the answer document with the rubric rating. • Do not scan the answer documents until the performance tasks are completed on the last three items.
Music End of Course Exam – 5th Grade Only • 14 multiple choice items • Teachers will administer the multiple choice items and students will use the answer document to respond • Then each student will be scored on a 0-2 point rubric based on their performance; students may perform in small groups • The teacher will rate the student on each of 5 areas: • Appropriate singing voice • Correct rhythm • Clear diction • Correct posture • Correct pitch • Do not scan the answer documents until the performance tasks are completed on the last three items.
Administration and Times for Testing • EoCs are designed for about 60 minutes. • Extra time rule of thumb from PARCC ½ again as much time as estimated 60 + 30 BUT NOT TIMED. • Students may not have unsupervised breaks while they are completing a test. • Students may take tests via Data Director on line or paper/pencil except for the performance assessments • Do not start students with extra time accommodations in the afternoon if there are not 1 ½ to 2 hours after lunch.
Materials • Class sets of 40 will be provided to each teacher • Counts are being run from SchooloMax • Counts to the School Test Coordinator who will review with principal • Additional booklets can be ordered through Testing Services Center • Answer documents are printed at Testing Services Center both scannable and write in documents. • DFA and Rubrics will be distributed with booklets • For music MP3 files are available on RDA behind the log on site. (Luis is selecting additional songs as those provided by PED have issues).
Participants • EoCs are designed for all students who are enrolled in the courses associated with the exam • Students with disabilities may participate • English Language Learners – • in English or in Spanish • Students with 504 Accommodation Plans
Exceptions • Students who Opt Out • Students with severe disabilities may consider the NMAPA as the alternate as PED has not provided an alternative EoC • Students with severe disabilities who are enrolled in a content course for socialization or for goals other than the content use NMAPA • Students in adaptive PE would not participate in the standard PED unless the PE class in which they participate covers the same standards as the general Ed. PE.
Accommodations • Most common ones are • Read aloud, • More time, • scribe, and/or assistive devices • Students with IEPs or 504s are afforded the same accommodations as they have for the same content in SBA (math, science, writing) • ELL students may use word-word dictionaries or translators (headphones) • Other students for whom you provide accommodations may have them as this EoC was developed as a class final
Opt Out (Participants, Scoring) • Parents may opt out their students from any or all of the EoCs • Must provide the signed form • Mark the EoCs on the reverse side that their student will not take • Provide the student with reasonable educational activities • Must not adversely affect student’s grade or any other activities • Can’t remove student from a pizza party or field trip for participants • Exception: if the student fails to do their assigned work • If teachers give an extra credit grade for students taking the EoC, then students who opt out earn that grade if they participate in the assigned work.
Passing and Grades • Passing scores for new fall EoCs will be available in April. • Data Director will score to the key but will not provide a pass/fail until we have the scores from PED. • Do not use the EoC as a class final exam grade. • May use PARTICIPATION in the EoC or alternative assignment as an extra credit grade ONLY
True or False: Cite Evidence from the Text • Students with accommodations of read aloud for math may not have the same accommodation for Art or Music • The NM PED created EoCs for 4th and 5th graders in PE, Art and Music • APS will use all three EoCs in all grades for which they are designed. • Teachers must use the music provided by the PED for the performance tasks. • Teachers should score the tests and give students a passing score as soon as the tests are finished. • Students in adaptive PE should participate in the 4th grade PE EoC.
True or False - continued • Student who are not special education or ELL or have a 504 Plan may have accommodations. If true, why? • As soon as you scan the EoCs you will be able to report pass/fail status to each student. • Students who opt out may be given work that is graded for a classwork or assignment grade. • After passing scores are obtained from PED the EoC may be used as a class final grade.
