  2. Carbohydrates • Fuels you to make your body function • Examples: fruit, beverages including orange juice, milk • Provides about half of your body’s energy • Are found in breads, pastas, wines, fruits. • Two types: • Simple (all sugars) • Complex (fiber and startches)

  3. Fats • Nutrients in food that the body uses to build tissue • Body uses fat as fuel. • Body saves fat for when food is scarce. • Two harmful fats: • saturated fat and trans fat. • Examples: butter, meat, french fries doughnuts, soybeans, oils, fish

  4. Protein • Necessary for the building and repair of body tissues.  • Prevents one from becoming easily tired • Examples- grains, legumes, seeds, nuts and vegetables • Two types: • Complete protein- source that contains all 8 essential acids • Incomplete proteins- proteins that lacks one or more of the 8 essential acids.

  5. Fiber • Helps the body to flush out bad fluids • Is in fruits, vegetables and grains. • Two types of fiber: • Water-soluble- dissolves in water and is found in oat bran and various fruits and vegetables • Insoluble- cannot be dissolved in water bodies cannot digest it.

  6. Vitamins • Your body needs them to work properly • Examples: carrots, milk, oranges, and any vegetable • Two types: • Fat soluble- stored in your body until needed • Water soluble- travel through your blood • Waits in your body fat until your body needs them.

  7. Minerals • Important for proper functioning of the body • Examples: milk, meat, nuts, dairy products, fruit, vegetables, grains • Types: • Magnesium, calcium, iron, zinc, phosphorus, potassium • Something that is necessary for our growth

  8. Water • Removes dangerous fluids that your body takes in • Carries nutrients into all your cells • Examples: All fruits and most vegetables • Roughly 70% of an adult’s body is water • The weight a person loses after activities is water
