Stress Factors in Aquaculture

We need to see the various stress factors which hamper the growth of fish and shrimp in controlled aquaculture environments. The objective is to recognise the stress causing factors and how they affect growth of the cultivated shrimp and fish. In the end we need to showcase how aeration can help reduce the stress on shrimp and fish being cultivated <br>

  1. Stress Factors in Aquaculture

  2. What is Stress ? • Stress is any condition that causes physical or mental discomfort that results in the release of stress-related hormones or results in specific physiological responses. • Stress can be physical, psychological, or environmental. • Stress can either be short and sudden, or long and chronic.  • Mild, short-term stress has few serious health effects, but long-term stress or severe, short-term stress contribute to many of the illnesses and deaths in aquarium fish.

  3. Effect of Stress on Fish’s and Shrimp’s Health • Short-term stress will cause an increase in heart rate, blood pressure, and respiration • The fish can only maintain these altered states for a short period of time and then they will adapt or the stress will become chronic. • In addition to having a negative effect on growth, reproduction, and digestion, chronic stress will also lower the ability of the immune system to respond effectively and fully. • Powered immune response is what allows parasites, bacteria, and fungi to infect a stressed fish and cause disease and death.

  4. Stress Symptoms White Spot Disease Discolouration

  5. Causes of Stress • Elevated Ammonia • Elevated Nitrate • Improper PH level • Fluctuation in Temperature • Improper Salinity • Low Oxygen level • Medication and Water treatments • Harassment from Other Fish

  6. How To Eliminate Stress • One can limit or prevent many causes of stress. • Acute stress is more obvious and needs to be addressed very quickly. Chronic stress is often not visible.  • One should maintain the Ammonia and Nitrate level in the water. • Maintain proper PH Level of the water. • Maintain the DO in the water by using good aeration technique.

  7. Why AirOxi Tube? • AirOxiTubeisone of the latest technologies for aquaculture aeration. • It is designed specially for commercial aquaculture and has been successfully installed in hundreds of acres of aquaculture ponds. • It has high efficiency in both salt water and fresh water. • AirOxiTubes are made with a blend of materials that provide durability and smooth air flow.
