Modernization • Industrialization • Free (Wage) labor • Adopt concept of a nation • Modernization (as a European development) necessitates the adoption of imperialism.
Industrialization • Acquire natural resources to mass produce goods • Markets to sell goods for profit • Secure global spheres of influence to safe-guard industrial interests.
Free (Wage) Labor • Pay laborers a low wage • From this wage laborers expected to finance their upkeep-food, lodging and other living expenses. • From their wages, laborers reinvested into the system by buying the goods that they produced in the factories that employed them.
Free (Wage) Labor cont. • Have laborers compete with each other for these jobs. • Hire the laborers willing to get paid the least. • Large population ensures a source of cheap labor. • Laborers turned into a interchangeable part of the machines in factories.
Adopt Concept of a Nation • Because the Industrial nations of Europe were traditionally poor in natural resources, they needed to conquer other territories to supply them with natural resources to feed European industry. • Modernization necessitates imperialism
Adopt Concept of a Nation • In order to achieve these goals the imperialist industrial community needs to adopt a broader view of itself in relation to the world. • Affiliations need to be transformed from small regional/parochial to a larger community. • The nation. • Thus the adoption of a national affiliation, nationalism, and the belief of national superiority are important factors necessary to fuel the drive towards conquest of other territories.
Industrial Nations…most do not possess many natural resources to feed their industry Southern hemisphere wealthy in natural resources forced to become export oriented economies
